What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineer to join the Purchased Product Value Stream group. The selected candidate will be the technical interface to product realization teams and the commercial supply base for the design and delivery of mechanical parts/components used in nuclear weapon design, development, and production activities. They will also participate in the product realization process (design through delivery), including early engagement in the development phase to define, validate, and clarify requirements for mechanical parts/components destined for use in nuclear weapons.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Lead the identification, development, and qualification of suppliers, assessing the technical capabilities of the suppliers to meet weapons requirements.
Lead efforts to improve fundamental understanding of material requirements, defining and conducting experiment work to close knowledge gaps and improve design definition.
Anticipate and maintain risk (i.e., sole source suppliers, sunset materials, technology development, etc.), identifying viable alternates and leading the technical evaluations and decision-making process.
Run product design definition (drawings, specifications, etc.) through the product life cycle (design-development-delivery).
Employ quality management systems and techniques, developing and managing comprehensive verification/qualification plans and defining acceptance criteria.
Manage multiple organizational interfaces, internally and externally.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range
$102,400 - $199,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development

About Our Team
The Purchased Product Value Stream Department is responsible for purchased products and logistic operations in support of Sandia National Laboratories production mission activities. Major areas of responsibility include:
Materials Planning - is responsible for developing the plan and authorizes procurement of production materials based on master schedule requirements.
Purchased ProductEngineering - is responsible for purchased products, including raw materials, tooling and end item components; serving as the liaison to design, product, and process engineers, production users, and suppliers in the areas of design definition, coordination of fabrication, and acceptance requirements.
Inventory Management & Logistics - provides services in inventory management, materials movement, receiving, and shipping.
Change Configuration Management Cell - manages the execution of product configuration in the Sandia drawing system and the Oracle manufacturing system for the Production Center.

Why This Role Matters
As the Facility Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the
integration of mechanical building system requirements for our nuclear fusion
demonstration system. You will work across several teams to develop the
building systems which enables us to achieve net facility gain. During
construction you will work with design consulting engineering and contractors to
ensure a quality installation which can be safely maintained. Following
construction, you will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and future
upgrades of the building systems.
This position is based in Albuquerque, NM and will require up to 50% travel to
our San Leandro, CA facility during the design and permitting process.

Conduct root cause analyses for recurring or high-impact equipment issues and implement long-term corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
Support installation, qualification, and validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) of new or modified packaging equipment.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in packaging processes and equipment reliability.
Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory and safety requirements (FDA, EMA, OSHA, etc.).
Manage and coordinate vendor support for equipment maintenance and upgrades.
Provide technical training to operators and maintenance personnel on equipment functionality and best practices.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field, Mechanical preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years' experience in packaging equipment within the manufacturing environment. Pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or medical device industry a plus.
Strong understanding of GMP, cGMP, and FDA regulations preferred.
Hands-on experience with packaging lines (vials, labeling, cartoning, serialization, etc.).
Proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical and automation systems (PLC, sensors, servos, HMIs).
Demonstrated experience managing equipment improvement or capital projects.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This role does not have supervisory responsibilities, yet it will involve mentoring, guiding, and advising other junior staffs.

SENIOR R&D PROCESS ENGINEER
Based out of Rocket Lab's site in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Senior R&D Process Engineer will work in an R&D environment to develop new processes and improve existing capabilities for the manufacture of cutting-edge III-V solar cell products. You will support the Process Engineering Manager, with deliverables required for internal leadership, board of directors, and investors.
WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:
Lead/contribute to semiconductor fabrication process development projects to advance new products from concept phase through manufacturing phase
Develop a detailed understanding of the design, construction, manufacturing methods, and operating principles of series interconnected multi-junction solar cells and their operation in the space environment
Develop an understanding of the relationship between fabrication process and device performance, cost, reliability, and manufacturability
Some examples include Mask design, photolithography, Wet etch, Metal deposition, Wafer thinning
Write process recipes, work instructions with process and engineering controls, and develop an understanding of fabrication tool functionality. Help troubleshoot tool issues and process-related device issues including hands-on work in a clean-room
Contribute technical innovation to improve product value and increase market share, including new device designs, manufacturing methods, and manufacturing cost reduction and analysis
Develop sufficient expertise with available modeling, growth, fabrication, test, and design tools to recommend better methods, improved designs and upgrade opportunities
