Even though most production processes are automated these days, it still takes a lot of work to keep them running smoothly. Workers need to monitor the machines, managers need to supervise the workers, and production administrators oversee any organizational tasks that need to be done to keep the production process moving.

The day-to-day duties of a production administrator usually involve a lot of administrative tasks. They keep track of materials and restock supplies as needed. They process paperwork, such as attendance logs for workers and job applications. The production administrator also acts as a liaison between the production line and supervisors who want to know what is going on.

People who want to be production administrators should be sure to read each job posting carefully--even though most production administrators work in manufacturing, some theatrical productions need administrators as well. No matter where they work, in arts or industry, production administrators need to be highly organized to support the work of others.

What general advice would you give to a production administrator?

Erin Dougherty

Don't underestimate what you can do. Make sure to advocate for yourself, push for the max salary listed once you've been offered the job, and be firm that you meet the qualifications. Talk about the skills you can do, how you can collaborate, and adjacent skill sets that could come into play, including "soft" skills. Don't lie of course, because that will come back to bite you, and facts are really easy to check these days. You need to express self-confidence if you're going to survive in this industry, and overall, be a good person to work with.

How did you land your first production administrator job

Letwin Mabvongodze

Production Administrator

My one is quite straightforward with mere hardwork and determination, I guess.

I studied at a private college in Zimbabwe. A three year Diploma which I completed in one year.

Moved to S.A Cape Town and got my first office job eight months later. As a Receptionist at an Employment Agency, Status Staffing Solutions.
Over the years I moved to different industries, always looking out for new career opportunities of growth. Ended up at DHL as a Customer Services Consultant before moving to Johannesburg.

I later returned to CapeTown and worked for Intellicard, the same CSC post. I got a Receptionist job at a renowned company Damen Shipyards. I accepted this offer as I saw growth opportunities within the company.

Two years in the company an internal post was vacant, I applied and got the Production Admin job. I was later retrenched and with the help of our then HR Manager I got a job as an HR Administrator with an NGO Organisation. Six years later I found my way back to Damen. It was 2020 just after Covid Lock down. Same Receptionist entrance post , and five months later was back to the Production Assistant post, which I still hold today.

What I don't like about the Production Assistant job is that it's quite uncertain when your next job will be.
