Who You Are
You're a college student or recent graduate with a Computer Science background who's excited to take on meaningful work and grow in a supportive, high-trust environment. You're looking for real responsibility and the chance to learn directly from experienced engineers who are invested in your success.
What You'll Own
This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll work closely with the team, contributing to code and features that matter from day one. You'll have support when you need it, but also the freedom to take ownership of your work.
End-to-End Ownership: Guide features from initial concept through deployment and user adoption. You'll see the full picture, not just isolated tasks.
Build Critical Infrastructure: Help build and maintain the data ingestion pipelines and analyst tools that power our platform. Your work will directly enable insights for clients and internal teams.
Explore the AI Frontier: Get hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI tools and technologies-think evals, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), semantic data layers, and other emerging capabilities. Direct Mentorship: Work closely with senior engineers who genuinely want to help you develop. Ask questions, pair program, get feedback, and build your skills in a supportive environment.
Collaborate Across Teams: Work with different groups to achieve shared goals. You'll practice explaining technical concepts to various audiences and translating user needs into solutions.
Work with Data: Design and perform analysis on our proprietary dataset to help inform product direction and understand your work's impact.
What We're Looking For
We value potential and eagerness to learn over having every skill mastered. Ideal candidates have:
Initiative: You're excited to contribute and willing to take on challenges
Curiosity About AI: Interested in exploring how AI/ML can solve real problems (no prior AI experience required-just genuine interest)
Growth Mindset: Eager to learn, open to feedback, and excited by new challenges
Strong Communication: Can explain your thinking clearly and ask thoughtful questions
Team-First Mentality: Collaborative, supportive, and focused on shared success
Technical Foundation: Some exposure to technologies like:
Python, Django, Flask, JavaScript, Vue, Node, HTML, CSS
Docker, Airflow, SQL, Postgres, Google Cloud Platform, Firebase
Git, CI/CD pipelines
Statistical modeling or data analysis (helpful but not required)
Why This Role Is Different
We believe in giving interns meaningful work and treating you as a developing engineer, not just someone passing through. You'll experience:
Real autonomy over your projects with guidance when you need it
Genuine ownership of features that users rely on
AI exploration opportunities to research and experiment with emerging technologies
Close mentorship from engineers who remember what it's like to be starting out
Fast learning cycles that help you grow quickly through hands-on experience
Broad exposure across the stack-from data pipelines to user-facing features to cutting-edge AI/ML tools
This internship is designed for those who want to actively contribute and grow, working on real problems alongside a supportive team while exploring the frontier of AI-powered data tools.

Quantum Software Intern
Phasecraft
Program development internship job in Washington, DC
Job Description
Phasecraft is the quantum algorithms company. We are building the mathematical foundations for quantum computing applications that solve real-world problems. Founded in 2019 by Toby Cubitt, Ashley Montanaro and John Morton, we are based in London and Bristol in the UK and opened an office in Washington DC in 2024, led by Steve Flammia. In 2025 we completed a $34m Series B funding round co-led by Plural, existing investor Playground Global, and Novo Holdings' Quantum Fund in its first direct quantum software investment.
Phasecraft's unprecedented access to today's best quantum computers - through partnerships with Google, IBM, Quantinuum and QuEra - provides us with unique opportunities to develop foundational IP, inform the development of next-generation quantum hardware, and accelerate commercialization of high-value breakthroughs.
We are delighted to launch our 2026 Quantum Software Internshipprogramme. As a Quantum Software Intern you will have the opportunity to join the Phasecraft team for a few (typically 3) months. Not only will you work on a technical research project focusing on the design, implementation or analysis of quantum algorithms and related techniques in near-term quantum computing, but you will also have the chance to experience life in a young and vibrant startup that is constantly pushing the boundaries of our knowledge of quantum computing. Past projects have ranged from theoretical work on the underpinning mathematics of quantum algorithms to writing code for real or simulated quantum hardware.
Our recent internshipprogrammes have proven to be meaningful and successful. In 2022 we hired our first permanent staff member who had previously participated in our Internshipprogramme and we have several ongoing collaborations with former interns. Some of the work undertaken during internships has also been published (Optimizing fermionic encodings for both Hamiltonian and hardware and Extracting the spin excitation spectrum of a fermionic system using a quantum processor). Our team has enjoyed working on challenging projects with talented interns with diverse academic backgrounds including Quantum Information Theory, Materials Science, Physics and Computer Science.
The internship is a paid position with a competitive salary. Interns are based with the Phasecraft team in our offices in Bristol and London in the UK and Washington DC in the US. Internships usually take place over the summer months, though dates can be flexible.
As a Quantum Software Intern, we expect the ideal candidate will have experience in the implementation of advanced quantum algorithms or otherwise strong evidence of potential to contribute to this area. A background in quantum computing is not necessarily required nor is a track record of publishing scientific papers in this area; however the candidate should be able to demonstrate a keen interest in quantum computing through formal or independent studies.
Requirements
Essential criteria:
Good understanding of algorithms and algorithmic analysis.
Strong programming skills, including in Python.
Bachelor or Masters degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or closely related field.
Enthusiasm for learning and novel research.
Desirable criteria:
Exposure to quantum computing and/or quantum information theory, via formal or independent studies.
Experience coding in quantum development environments (e.g. Cirq, Qiskit, QuEST) or in implementing quantum algorithms or novel classical algorithms on classical computers
Programming experience in Julia

Quantum Software Intern
Phasecraft
Program development internship job in Washington, DC
