    This internship at Mississippi State University is a 12-month clinical program. The intern will rotate between the surgery & medicine (food animal) and theriogenology (all species) services in house, and also the ambulatory service (large animal, including equine), with approximately equal time spent on each service. The internship provides training in clinical, hospital based service through interaction with clinical specialists (DACVIM, DABVP (Food Animal), DACT, MPH). The program is designed to prepare the individual for a residency in a corresponding discipline or entry into private practice. The program is directly supported by 2 diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 2 diplomates of the American College of Theriogenologists, 1 diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Food Animal), 2 clinical faculty professors, 2 clinical instructors, and 4 support staff. The food animal in house clinic annual case load is 1,200-1,500 cases/year (beef 60%, dairy 30%, small ruminants 10%), and ambulatory makes 1000 trips/year (40% equine, 40% beef cow/calf and 20% dairy/small ruminants). For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department. Area of Specialization: Food Animal Essential Duties and Responsibilities: In addition to workup and management of patients, with related communication with clients and referring veterinarians, other duties will include assisting in new student orientation, and supervision and instruction of DVM students and veterinary technology students. Emergency duties on a rotating basis with other residents (1-3) and interns (1-3) under the guidance of an emergency clinician are also required. These includes after-hours and weekend emergencies for both the Food Animal in house and Ambulatory services. Participation in teaching rounds for DVM students, and seminars and journal club for house officers, is required. Providing assistance in veterinary teaching laboratory sessions will be required. Creative activities such as research and manuscript preparation are encouraged, but not required.     The purpose of the veterinary internship is to introduce pre-vet, veterinary technician students, and veterinary students to the specialty of zoo veterinary medicine. The intern will assist the veterinarian and technician daily with procedures, treatments, hospital maintenance, etc. The Hattiesburg Zoo is home to 100+ species of animals. The hospital team consists of a full-time veterinarian and certified veterinary technician. Duties: ● Assist veterinary staff with routine procedures (immobilizations, physical exams, treatments, etc.as well as emergency procedures. ● Assist veterinary technician with lab work (parasitology, urinalysis, in-house blood work, preparing samples for outside laboratories). ● Assist with hospital maintenance (equipment cleaning, sterilization, inventory, etc.) ● Care for animals (cleaning and feeding) in hospital holding/quarantine when needed. ● Enter data into ZIMS program and scan/file records. ● Dispense medications under supervision of the veterinary technician or veterinarian. ● Assist with necropsies. ● Assist with animal diet preparation when needed. ● Complete and present a case study or project for veterinary, keeper, nutrition, and/or education staff that reflects something you have learned during the internship. ● Responsibilities will be dependent on the applicant's experience and skills. Requirements: ● Students should be enrolled in an accredited veterinary technology program or an active student in veterinary school with a long-term interest in zoo/wildlife medicine. Experience with exotic species is preferred but not required. Consideration will also be given to undergraduates with a pre-veterinary concentration depending on experience level. ● Students should be willing to learn, eager to create and complete projects and have a respect for wild animals. Students should also work well with others. It is preferred that the student have some previous animal experience. ● Applicants must be available to work at least 24 hrs/week (40 hrs/week preferred) and must be able to work a flexible schedule. ● Candidates must be able to lift 50lbs., climb in and out of truck beds, remain bending/standing/stooping for long periods of time, and work in adverse weather conditions. ● A negative tuberculin test within the past year is required. Current rabies and tetanus vaccinations are recommended. Duration: Our current internship is only available during the summer months (Jun-Aug). Internships will last a minimum of 8-10 weeks. The internship is limited to one intern at a time. Compensation: The Veterinary Intern at the Hattiesburg Zoo is offered a stipend of $10/hr for the summer internship program. The zoo does not offer housing to interns/externs but alternative options may be available upon request, however, they are not guaranteed. Uniform: Interns are required to wear tan khaki pants/shorts and comfortable closed toed shoes. A uniform shirt will be provided for interns for the duration of their internship. It is recommended to bring a pair of scrubs, a spare change of clothes, and a standard color (black or gray) rain jacket due to some duties being performed outside. Sunglasses are permitted but need to be black in color and non distracting. A name tag, if issued by your school, is also preferred.
