Progressive Acute Care company history timeline

1946

The hospital was initially secured by a committee to investigate the possibility of a county hospital in 1946. As a result of the committee’s efforts to inform the citizens of Boone County of the need for a hospital, a vote was held on June 14, 1946 and was given the go ahead by a vote of 1554 to 703.

Actual construction work on the project began on October 25th, 1948.

1950

The drive for hospital funds went over the top on Wednesday, January 11, 1950 after a year of fundraising.

The hospital was finished and an Open House held on February 12, 1950.

1967

The founding of the palliative care movement, however, is widely attributed to Dame Cicely Saunders, a British physician and humanitarian who pioneered the palliative care approach with the opening of St Christopher’s Hospice in London in 1967.

Co-founded by Rocco A. Ortenzio and Robert A. Ortenzio in 1996, Select Medical began as a regional provider of outpatient physical rehabilitation.

1999

In 1999, Select Medical made one of its largest acquisitions by purchasing NovaCare Physical Rehabilitation and Occupational Health.

2006

In the United Kingdom it took a further two decades for palliative care to be recognized as a medical speciality, and in the United States it was not accepted as a medical discipline until 2006.
