A Senior Applications Engineer is responsible for assessing the costs and resources required for a project or service. They analyze project specifications, review drawings and data sheets, and collaborate with various stakeholders to determine material, labor, and equipment needs. Estimators also research market prices, obtain quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, and prepare detailed cost estimates and proposals. Their role is crucial in ensuring accurate budgeting and pricing for projects in construction, manufacturing, engineering, and other industries.

Essential Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities:
Independently review customer supplied specifications to assess feasibility of Powell manufacture or supply
Read and interpret electrical drawings to include single-lines, three-lines, elevations, control schematics, site plans and electrical enclosure layouts
Generate accurate proposals based on the review and interpretation of customer-supplied documentation
Recognize and effectively communicate application concerns prior to development of proposal
Translate conceptual customer designs into a meaningful proposal
Optimize the proposed solution to best benefit Powell and our customer
Write effective comments to help define Powell's offering
Act as technical resource for Powell Sales
Assist Powell Sales with internal and external technical discussions and solutions
Perform competitive evaluation of sub vendor proposals used to complete the overall Powell offering
Assess risk associated with sub-vendor offering
Interact with other Powell divisions to develop cross business solutions
Requires minimal supervision.
Project responsibilities may be average to complex.
May be selected to lead a project requiring contribution from multiple Application Engineers.

Participate in sales and marketing activities to include client meetings and conferences
Participate in executing cost out initiatives in conjunction with Engineering and Operations
Perform analytical or competitive market studies as required

B.S. in Electrical Engineering or relevant discipline

4+ years of experience in electrical equipment estimating, or related field.

Build and maintain a working knowledge of electrical theory and applicable industry standards including IEEE/ANSI, NEC, IBC and NFPA.
Applied knowledge of low & medium voltage distribution equipment ratings and design such as LV/MV Switchgear, Motor Control Centers, and Breakers.
Applied knowledge of DC systems, UPS systems, HVAC and pressurization
Applied knowledge of interconnect, conduit and cable schedules
Ability to read and interpret electrical specifications
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings to include single lines, three lines, schematics and wiring diagrams

The successful applicants will hold a Professional Engineering license in California. We are looking for someone with 10+ years of experience in various hydroelectric and water resource projects.
Technical work in this role includes feasibility studies, engineering designs, preparation of construction drawings and specifications and project management for hydroelectric facilities and new hydroelectric developments in Canada and the USA.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform site inspections and condition assessments of existing water retaining and water conveyance structures
Assess and investigate alternative methods for carrying out projects for hydroelectric facilities and water retaining and flow control structures

Assist in the development of engineering change proposals (ECPs) and process improvements.
Collaborate with Quality Assurance to address part quality concerns and support audits or inspections.
Provide engineering input during program reviews, readiness assessments, and fleet status meetings.
Prepare technical reports, briefs, and presentations for PMO, supply chain, and customer stakeholders.
Ensure compliance with FAA, military, OEM, contractual, and customer regulations and standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Aeronautical, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering required.
3+ years of aviation/aerospace engineering experience required (military or contractor environment preferred).
Experience with T-6 aircraft or trainer platforms highly desired.
Experience with OEM, FAA, or military airworthiness standards preferred.
Experience with configuration management, material engineering, or supply support systems preferred..
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required Skills include the ability to:)

The hiring range for these positions are $33.00 - $45.00 p/hour and is determined by candidate experience. A college graduate with no experience in industrial automation starts at $33.00 p/hour. A college graduate with some experience (including relevant internships) starts at $36.00 p/hour. An engineer with 2-3 years of relevant experience pays up to $45.00 p/hour.

What You'll Do:
Contribute to the development and assessment of offshore platforms, chemical plants, and LNG terminals.
Develop design criteria and specifications for various structures, systems, and components.
Perform blast and fire response analyses.
Perform structural, seismic, and soil-structure interaction analyses.
Perform dropped object, ship collision, and projectile impact studies.
Metocean analysis of offshore structures and structural integrity management program support.
Design new structures and repairs of existing structures.
Assist with research and development efforts for LNG plants and offshore wind structures.

This compensation range is a good faith estimate pursuant to applicable equal pay and pay transparency laws. The pay range below is effective for 2026 and based on highest degree achieved. The actual salary offered will be based on several factors including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and work location.

Master's Degree: $83,200 - $85,280
Doctorate Degree: $90,480 - $92,560
