Propulsion engineer job description

We are looking for a Propulsion Engineer to join the team. They will be responsible for design development and release of test equipment, instrumentation and air breathing propulsion systems. They will support dyno commissioning, instrumentation and first-run activities. Developing and qualifying propulsion systems, and supporting flight testing as needed.

WHAT YOU'LL DOAssist in research and development regarding design of aircraft engines, engine components, advanced combustion and fuel injection systems.Specify, design, fabricate, install, and test prototype components and control systems.Specify, design, and install instrumentation on test assets for data acquisition.Collect, organize, and post-process test data to generate test reports with conclusions with recommendations for further work.Lead and participate in continuous improvement activities, including process improvement, efficiency improvement and development of data analysis techniques

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSBS or higher degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical EngineeringKnowledge of fundamentals of internal combustion engines. Exposure to testing of engines, or powertrain components. Practical experience with diagnostics monitoring, failure detection and data analysis. Mechatronics experience; sensor selection, design and assembly of actuators, setup of data acquisition systems, assemble wire harnesses and debug/troubleshoot systems. Experience designing mechanical parts (CAD). Understanding of manufacturing methods (machining, sheet metal, composites, 3D printing, injection molding, etc.) Experience procuring parts and working in a machine shop. Working knowledge of machine safety and shop safety protocols.U.S. Person status is required as this position needs to access export controlled data

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge and experience working with Engine Management Systems (EMS), OEM or motorsport. Understanding of engine dynamometer operation including testing practices, instrumentation, and calculations Practical or professional experience with internal combustion engines.

Provide technical oversight of our external propulsion development partners to support the development and testing of propulsion technologies.
Lead the development and execution of propulsion system test plans including fuel system, propulsion performance characterization, reliability/maintainability testing, aerodynamic performance characterization, thermal management, and acoustics performance.
Lead design and analysis activities related to propulsion system improvements.
Recruit and grow a team of support engineers and technicians to support the development and execution of propulsion system testing.
Oversee the development of in-house propulsion test facilities.
Manage and mentor propulsion development team.
Produce technical reports to capture and communicate the findings of the propulsion system testing and analysis.
Oversee the development and release of detailed design documents including CAD models, 2D drawings, assembly instructions, acceptance test plans and other design artifacts.
Use data and analysis to set acceptance criteria for production and engineering propulsion hardware testing.

Projects that you might work on:
V-BAT Block 1 and Block 2 propulsion system development.
Required qualifications: Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years experience; or equivalent experience. 2+ years of management/leadership experience. May supervise the activities of others

Propulsion Engineer, Engine Test
ABL's Engine RE (Responsible Engineer) team owns the successful performance of all ABL rocket engines. A Propulsion Engineer, Engine Test on this team is responsible for planning and execution of engine testing at ABL. This means formulating initial test plans, sitting on console for engine hotfires, performing data reviews, and leading anomaly investigations.

In this role you will work closely with test engineers and technicians to drive integration and test schedules that quickly buy down risk on ABL's engine systems across development, qualification, and acceptance testing. You will own and maintain engine system schematics, balances, and sequences, while making decisions quickly and effectively. You'll get your hands dirty inspecting engine hardware and will work closely with technicians to make changes to the hardware configuration. You will be responsible for increasing test cadence through automation and strategic scope reduction.

Engineers on the Engine RE team are highly motivated, proactive individuals who hold the highest level of accountability and drive a fast-paced environment at ABL's test sites.
RESPONSIBILITIES:Create test plans and lead Test Readiness ReviewsDrive and maintain engine statepoints using engine simulation tools Own all hardware documentation and procedures Work with test technicians to integrate test articles, update and maintain hardware configuration Author and maintain automated test sequences Monitor live test data on-console to evaluate engine health during test operations Lead post-test data review, working closely with component owners to inform engine performance Utilize learnings from testing to drive component and software requirements, and define hardware interfaces Automate data review to increase test cadence
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:B.S. in any engineering discipline from an accredited university One or both of the following experience bases:Hands-on extracurricular projects or internships/co-ops 2+ years of industry experience in an integration & test, design, or production role
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:In-depth understanding of compressible/incompressible flow and thermodynamics Experience writing and executing test procedures and/or autosequences for complex hardware operations Strong technical writing and communication skills with experience writing test plans and executing readiness reviews Ability to program scripts in Python

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:The Propulsion Engineer, Engine Test must be willing to travel to launch and test sites to support integration and test work
