About the Job - Your Role
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners provide psychiatric assessment and psychotropic medication management as clinically indicated to mentally ill adults in custody (AIC) within the Behavioral Health Services (BHS) of the ODOC, including referral of AICs to programs and services as appropriate, and to provide on-call crisis intervention services after-hours, holidays, and on weekends. The employee will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and will coordinate care of AIC patients with other members of the treatment team.
BHS is comprised of an administrative unit which sets policy and long-term direction for targeted service populations at each of the institutions which may include diagnostic evaluation, stabilization, treatment, release planning, and case-management services for mentally ill and developmentally disabled AICs. A continuum of special housing assignments have been identified in the Mental Health Infirmary, Intermediate Care Housing, Behavioral Housing Unit, Day Treatment, and Mental Health housing.
This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a current Oregon Nurse Practitioner license issued by the Oregon State Board of Nursing AND a current Prescriptive Authority Certification within the Oregon APRN Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice.

The work is conducted in an adult male and/or female prison. Adults in custody may become physically and verbally abusive and assaults and disturbances may occur. The incumbent serves as an active member of treatment teams providing consultation and direct patient care in collaboration with multidisciplinary staff. Provides a full range of professional psychiatric services to address the complex issues (i.e. medical, vocational, educational, and social) faced by Veteran patients served in the Behavioral Health and Primary Care clinics. Provides psychiatric services to the Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP) which includes performing initial admission evaluations for Veterans admitted to the unit and subsequent clinically appropriate follow-up visits in addition to services performed in outpatient Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program.(BHIP).
These direct services include, but are not limited to:

DESCRIPTION
This position provides mental health nursing care, medication oversight and treatment to clients across four residential locations in Pendleton and Boardman. Promotes recovery from mental illness.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Administers oral medications and hypodermic injections, following physician's prescriptions and procedures.
Takes and records measures of patient's general physical condition such as pulse, temperature and respiration to provide daily information.
Observes patients to detect behavior patterns and reports observations to medical staff.
Leads prescribed individual, group therapy and/or education sessions as part of specific therapeutic procedures.
Contact patient's relative by telephone to arrange family conferences.
Issues medications from dispensary and maintains records in accordance with specified procedures.
Educates staff and patients about personal hygiene such as bathing and keeping beds, clothing and living areas clean.
Educates and trains staff on medication administration, ensures documentation is kept according to policies.
Must report all abuse to appropriate legal office, complete all necessary paperwork and investigations, and develop safety plans as required.
Actively participate in joint case planning and coordination with agency employees and relevant agency contractors. Act as a liaison between clients and other agencies. Act as a client advocate when appropriate.
Provide after hours emergency services on a 24 hour, rotating basis to adults. This includes telephone consultation and crisis intervention in the community and facility.
Complete all paperwork in a way that is professional, clinically sound and timely as prescribed by the OAR's and other pertinent guidelines. Required to ensure that all paperwork is present, and/or the client record is well maintained.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in nursing from a four-year college or university; and two to four years related experience and/or training.
Individual must be able to pass a criminal history background check.
Preference given to individuals who have worked with individuals who have mental illnesses in a residential or psychiatric hospital setting.
Other Skills and Abilities
Must possess, or have the ability to acquire, knowledge of symptoms and challenges faced by people with mental illness and addictions. Must have, or possess the ability to acquire, knowledge about relevant OAR's.
Must have the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing and have the ability to work independently and complete all responsibilities in a thorough and timely fashion.
Must have skills to professionally work with the public and the ability to coordinate services across various agencies and community groups.
Must be able to develop cooperative and respectful relationships with clients and their families.
Must have knowledge, or the ability to acquire knowledge, about the recovery model.
Must possess the ability to represent the interest of the customer and the agency in a favorable light in the community.
Must have the ability to work well with teams and other groups of individuals.
The position requires the handling of highly confidential information. Must adhere to rules and laws pertaining to client confidentiality.
Must posses, or have the ability to possess functional knowledge of business English and medical terminology.
Must have good spelling and basic mathematical skills.
Must have the ability to learn assigned tasks readily and to adhere to general office procedures.

Must hold a valid driver's license as well as personal auto insurance for privately owned vehicles utilized for CCS business such as client service purposes, travel between business offices and the community, to attend required meetings and trainings.
Must show proof of $300,000 or more liability coverage for bodily injury and $100,000 or more in property damage, and maintain said level of coverage for the duration of employment at CCS.
The employee's insurance is primary with CCS insurance being secondary. CCS reserves the right to deny any employee the use of a vehicle owned by CCS.
