Expert opinions on the best states for public health advisors

  • Are there any particularly good places in the United States for public health advisors to find work opportunities?

    Vanessa LamersVanessa Lamers LinkedIn profile

Assistant Director of Performance Management and Quality Improvement, Public Health Foundation (PHF)

I always recommend recent graduates look for opportunities with their local or state health department. Health departments are often an excellent resource for internships and positions for recent graduates. They collect, maintain, and analyze a wealth of information on their local jurisdictions and communities, evaluate programs and processes, and provide a wealth of opportunities to gain experience and learn from experts in the field. Many national public health leaders talk of the time they spent in local health departments and how it drastically shaped their careers. There is also a rich nonprofit sector, both domestically and internationally, and a variety of opportunities in academia.
