On March 24, 1803, the Ohio legislature authorized the creation of Montgomery County.
Newcom’s Tavern served as the courthouse until a brick courthouse was constructed around 1806.
The jury box had no seating at first, and it wasn’t until 1811 that tables were even brought in.
The county was greatly successful in part because of the construction of nine turnpikes which connected further parts of the state with Dayton, and the completion of the Miami-Erie Canal in 1829 that connected Dayton to Cincinnati.
In 1999, the per capita income in the county was 28,113 dollars, with 11.1 percent of the people living in poverty.
With a population of 166,179 people, Dayton was the county's largest community in 2000.
