Your daily work will include:
Primarily medical monitoring of ongoing clinical trials, requiring:
Solid understanding of the pharmacology/toxicology profile of drug compounds.
Strong clinical competency in assessing medical observations/lab findings.
Critical thinking skills required to assess comorbidities and study drug safety in an individual clinical trial subject.
Advising our research monitors and clinical operations leaders, helping make decisions that support both our clinical investigators and our study teams.
Analyzing R&D data to leverage results to execute optimal clinical trials.
Mastering protocol and procedures of ongoing clinical trials and contributing to the design and development of new aging drugs for dogs, starting from preclinical studies through full FDA CVM approval.
Serving as subject matter expert, translating veterinary knowledge across R&D, drug development, and clinical operations while advising teams on the veterinary perspective.
Focusing on attention to detail and meticulous record keeping to bring precision and accuracy to medical monitoring, record keeping, and reviewing clinical data and regulatory documents.
Upholding GCP standards and following FDA CVM regulations.
Occasional travel is required.

DVM or equivalent degree required.

Answer medical questions over the phone
See patients right away as part of the VEG Triage and VEG Spikes, our unique, customer-centered way of doing things-like ensuring people see a doctor right away and allowing families to stay with their pets
Gather the signalment, presenting complaint, vitals, and physical exam
Conduct physical examinations of animals, along with other required investigatory measures such as ultrasounds, X-rays, bloodwork, and biopsies
Complete a diagnosis of each pet's condition to create a diagnostic and therapeutic plan
Communicate diagnosis and treatment options directly with customers
Prepare estimates and present them to customers
Create and review medical records to ensure accuracy
Demonstrate the value of tests and treatments performed by speaking with the customer and addressing their concerns
Perform minor and major emergency surgeries

Educate customers on after care and preventative measures where appropriate

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Primate Resources, this position serves as a Veterinary Pathologist. The position conducts diagnostic and investigative the pathology of nonhuman primates (NHPs) housed at the WaNPRC.
**POSITION COMPLEXITIES:**
Essential skills include the ability to perform diagnostic and research necropsies, interpret observations of gross and microscopic tissues, apply and interpret immunohistochemistry and molecular biological techniques, interpret clinical pathology results as applied to spontaneous disease occurrences, and support for ongoing research programs. Good teaching skills are required as this position is expected to train relevant staff on pertinent concepts and skills.
**POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY:**
Pathology is an integral part of maintaining and improving animal research, medicine and colony health. The primary objective of improving both human and nonhuman primate health depends on sound diagnostic interpretations and discovery of disease pathogenesis and novel therapeutics. This position will support multiple investigators on a variety of research grants and provide instruction to current animal care staff and rotating resident and students in the Washington National Primate Research Center and Department of Comparative Medicine, a part of the University of Washington Medical Center.
**POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:**
**Routine Pathology (40%)**
- Conduct diagnostic and investigative pathology of nonhuman primate material.
- Provide routine and/or specific veterinary pathology services for WaNPRC nonhuman primates, including evening, weekend and holidays.
- Study pathology material specific to virology, immunology, and infectious disease studies.
**Tissue Distribution Program (20%)**
- Direct the program
- Identify and assign animals to the project using recommendations from clinical, research and PWB groups and the reviewing animal histories.
- Create monthly schedules, process orders and tissue collection, sample distribution and billing.
- Train and oversee necropsy staff in sterile tissue collections, detailed dissections and numerous tissue preparations as requested.
- Develop techniques with researchers for performance of their research projects.
- Train colony and research staff in experimental tissue collections and minor procedures such as biopsies, suturing, blood draws, bone marrow aspirations, catheter placement etc.

- Develop collaborative research projects, and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.

**Teaching Duties (10%)**
- Instruction of Post-DVM residents and veterinary students in the Department of Comparative Medicine in diagnostic and research pathology.
- Preparation of residents and faculty for the American College of Veterinary Pathology Board Certification exam.
- Instruction of Clinical Veterinarians of the WaNPRC in diagnostic histopathology and pertinent clinicopathology.
- Preparation of Clinical Veterinarians of the WaNPRC and Post-DVM residents in Department of Comparative Medicine for the pathology/diagnostic portion of the American College of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians Board Certification exam.
- Seminars and other forums of education/training of the WaNPRC personnel in pathology and medicine.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:**
- Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from a College of Veterinary Medicine that is accredited by the American Veterinary Association or has a certificate issued by the American Veterinary Association's Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates.
- Certification by the ACVP in anatomic pathology.
- Five (5) years of minimum experience.
- Equivalent experience cannot substitute for degree requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral formats.
- Demonstrated capacity to collaborate well with a diverse staff and research investigators.
- Knowledge of animal welfare regulations and bio-safety principles.
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office suite of software.

**WORKING ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:**
The position allows remote work, such as from home, as deemed feasible and necessary.
This position may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures, and staying current on all required training. Bloodborne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory. This position involves handling nonhuman primates and human pathogenic organisms. The ability to work in an ABSL-3 containment facility may be required.

What You'll Do
The Consulting Veterinarian in Clinical Toxicology (CVCT) systematically gains toxicology knowledge through the APC's staged training and mentoring process. The CVCT plays a critical role at the APC managing cases regarding animals that have been exposed to potentially dangerous substances. The environment is fast paced, challenging, and loaded with support to help achieve success. The person in this position shares our expertise with veterinarians, animal owners, and others (e.g., law enforcement, etc.) who are involved in cases. In addition, the CVCT provides consultation for support staff, advising them in managing APC cases. The CVCT participates in other projects and events that are established to support APC work, further education, and enhance communication within the ASPCA.
The ASPCA supports our staff with career development. CVCTs may be eligible to sit for the American Board of Toxicology exam after 3 years and the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology exam after 3 years. In addition to toxicology board certification, the CVCT has career opportunities in a variety of departments and locations within the ASPCA.
Where and When You'll Work
This is a regional remote position. Candidates must be U.S. based and reside within a 350-mile radius of the ASPCA Office in Champaign, IL for the duration of employment, and be available for travel to Champaign, IL.
Relocation assistance may be offered to candidates who currently reside outside of the 350- mile radius and are willing to relocate.
Schedule:
This is a late evening position that includes nights, evenings, and holidays.
Once proficiently trained, this position may work a full overnight shift approximately 3-5 times per year or a partial overnight shift 6-10 times per year to cover vacations for our overnight staff. We provide the option of a full overnight shift (10:00p - 6:00a) and partial overnight shifts (4:00a - 12:00p or 8:00p - 4:00a) or a mix of the two.

Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. Collect payments as needed with provided software tools.
Develop appropriate risk and rule out assessments based on the exposure history and clinical findings.
Provide additional differential diagnoses in those cases where it is determined that the original agent might not be or is not the agent responsible for the clinical findings.
Provide up-to-date treatment recommendations, including assisting veterinarian callers with critical care procedures including (but not limited to) interpretation of clinical laboratory results, institution of appropriate fluid therapy, establishment of fluid administration rates, and pain management.
Consult with both on-site and off-site experts in more complicated cases.
Advise support staff (veterinary technicians and assistants) in the management of cases per established APC protocols and through established veterinary knowledge.
