JOB OBJECTIVE:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:
* Currently pursuing a degree in marketing, communications, media or a related field; must be currently enrolled and have completed at least 60 credit hours with an accredited college or university

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

We are seeking a dynamic and resourceful Publisher Relations intern to work closely with our Content Strategy and Relationships Team, which manages the publisher partners that disseminate their publications on JSTOR.
This role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in managing relationships with publishers of electronic academic journals, learn about the scholarly publishing of licensed and open access journals, and work with individuals focusing on the nuances of content curation. You will have the opportunity to learn project management and to help identify important journals to support academic scholarship on JSTOR. You will assist the Content Strategy team in identifying journals that can be published as open access on JSTOR, increasing the discoverability and usage of these journals to individuals around the world.This position will report to the Senior Publisher Relations Manager.

About This Role

At Defector, we publish blogs of all kinds: reported features, sports analysis, media criticism, personal essays, and thoughtful (if sometimes dumb) takes. Defector interns, like the site's staff writers, will be responsible for writing about things they are interested in. They'll work with other staffers on reporting projects and, if interested, can contribute to Defector's social, newsletter, and podcast work.
A small mentorship group of Defector staffers will help interns learn more about the operations of our subscription business, brainstorm areas of coverage, and most importantly: blog. They should be comfortable working in a collaborative environment, and eager to discuss and hone their ideas with other writers and editors.
Applicants should have a decent understanding of the site's editorial vision and voice and ideas for how their work might fit into that. They will write what they know, and what they care about. The work is located in southwest Ohio and will be based out of one of our three newsrooms - Dayton, Springfield or Hamilton. Work assignments will be determined after final selection based on the intern's abilities and stated interests and newsroom needs.

Job Description
The Dayton Daily News, Springfield News-Sun, and Journal-News media brands, which are part of Cox First Media, have openings for internship positions for summer 2026.
The work is located in southwest Ohio and will be based out of one of our three newsrooms - Dayton, Springfield or Hamilton. Work assignments will be determined after final selection based on the intern's abilities and stated interests and newsroom needs.
Each paid internship is approximately 20 hours per week for 10 weeks. The exact start and stop dates, as well as the intern's weekly schedule, will be determined before the internship begins based on the intern's needs and company needs.
Assignments may include but are not limited to:
* Producing multiple stories per week in a fast-paced environment. Interns will be assigned to an editor who will guide their assignments and provide coaching and training about approaching their stories.
* Creating and delivering digital content, which could include digital stories focused on speed and accuracy.
* Producing photos and videos to help tell your own stories or in collaboration with other content producers.
* Promoting our content through social media, website placement and email newsletters.
* Working with other parts of our operation for exposure to our business, including marketing.

Minimum requirements:
* Currently enrolled in a related degree program such as journalism or communications.

Preferred qualifications: One or more of the following:
* Experience in working for a student or professional media outlet or other relevant communication work.
* Experience in using metrics to guide content decisions.
* Experience using social media or other methods to reach digital audiences
* Understanding of planning and executing content ideas quickly.
Our organization is in a hybrid work environment with a mix of working from home and working in the office. We expect our interns to be able to come into the office or go out on assignments in our coverage areas as needed.
