Job Summary
Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Quality Innovation Engineering Intern to support the development and implementation of quality strategies and support quality assessments of the design, build, and operation of near-term nuclear and non-nuclear hardware demonstration projects. The Quality Innovation Engineering Intern will work in close partnership with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls (I&C), testing, manufacturing, operations, and licensing engineering staff to identify safety-related items and activities, applicable quality assurance requirements, support the development of quality strategies, and support assessments of activities in progress and after completion to ensure effective quality program implementation.
In addition, the Quality Innovation Engineering Intern will work with technology partners to collect operating experience from the Kairos Power technology development program and identify potential conditions adverse to quality, associated causes and corrective actions. This role will contribute to the technology development programs for the demonstration and commercialization of Kairos Power reactors.
Responsibilities
Develop and document quality strategies rooted in engineering best practices to satisfy applicable quality requirements for safety-related systems and projects.
Support assessments of the implementation of quality strategies across project lifetimes using in-field observation, interviews and objective evidence from documents and records.
Participate in project meetings, reviews and walkthroughs to support identification of risks, gaps and improvement opportunities in work execution and documentation.
Assist Kairos Power hardware technology development by capturing, analyzing and disseminating operating experience, as well as support corrective action and continuous improvement.
Support continuous improvement efforts internal to the Quality Innovation team that improve automation of analysis and documentation work products.
Assist with tracking and trending quality-related data (e.g., nonconformances, operating experience, assessment outcomes) and preparing summaries for team review.
Other duties as assigned, which may include hands-on assignments with hardware fabrication, assembly, commissioning, and operation.
Qualifications
Currently enrolled and pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, Civil, or Materials Engineering, or equivalent.
Experience with data analysis/automation and ability to develop further experience in R, R Markdown, Python, git, LaTeX, Bash/Shell/Batch scripting, Docker, VS Code, GitHub, etc.
Hands-on experience with hardware design, fabrication, assembly, or testing preferred.

What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking an outstanding synthetic materials chemist to establish both an independent research program and a develop a user program with capabilities on offer to the external user community at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT), a DOE-funded user facility. Our ideal candidate is a recognized synthetic materials chemistry expert with a substantive body of doctoral-level research performed in an academic or other professional research and development settings who has the proven capability to operate at a high level within a DOE user facility or other such formal research center. The successful candidate will be a synthetic chemist working in an area of interest to the Soft, Biological, and Composite Nanomaterials Thrust at CINT. Of particular interest are synthesis, characterization, and applications of polymers and/or nanoparticles, but outstanding candidates working to synthesize other materials that have synergistic opportunities will be considered. The successful candidate will support AI-guided design, combinatorial synthesis, and circular materials workflows

About Our Team
The Nanosystems Synthesis and Analysis Department consists of CINT scientific research staff assigned to the Physical, Chemical, & Nanosciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. CINT is a DOE/Office of Science National User Facility operated jointly by Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories with facilities at both Laboratories. The CINT Science Department is dedicated to establishing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials into microscale and macroscale systems and devices.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
You may qualify if you meet one of the following:
1. GS-7: You must have completed or will complete a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's from an accredited institution AND must have documented Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) at the undergraduate level in the following:
a) Grade Point Average 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of curriculum; OR 3.45 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in your major field or the required courses in your major field completed during the final 2 years of your curriculum.
2. GS-9: You must have completed 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree:
a) Grade Point Average - 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of curriculum; OR 3.45 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in your major field or the required courses in your major field completed during the final 2 years of your curriculum. If more than 10 percent of total undergraduate credit hours are non-graded, i.e. pass/fail, CLEP, CCAF, DANTES, military credit, etc. you cannot qualify based on GPA.

You'll be responsible for monitoring product quality, conducting tests on seasonings, batters, breading, and marinades, and randomly pulling products off the line to check weight, length, and thickness against customer specifications. Every hour, you'll perform metal detection checks, box weight tracking, and organoleptic testing (cooking and tasting products) to guarantee that our food meets safety and quality standards. You'll manage critical documentation, work closely with U.S.D.A. and S.S.O.P. requirements, and train backup QC Technicians to ensure seamless operations. Your role also includes enforcing GMP practices across the plant and participating in weekly QA meetings to stay ahead of industry developments. QUALIFICATIONS:
Proficiency with computers
Adherence to quality and safety guidelines
Physical ability to stand, walk, kneel, and lift up to 25 lbs in a cold, loud, and fast-moving production environment
Basic math skills with the ability to use a calculator to determine percentages and averages
Great communications skills, both written and verbal
Strong organization and time management skills
Team player

The Chemical Technologist, working under limited supervision, is responsible for leading production chemical support, corrosion strategies, risk assessment, failure analysis, and integrity management support to the production operations group. * Analyzes technical data to optimize chemical program with the goal to minimize chemical cost and asset failures, evaluates effectiveness of chemical treatment, improves process related to drilling, completions, and production, and analyzes data through SAP.
* Leads cost/benefit analysis of individual chemicals along with each area's chemical program, educates lease operators on chemicals, injection rates, and chemical injection/storage equipment used in their area through training sessions.
* Supports and facilitates field equipment installs and upgrades, reviews surface equipment failure database, conducts data analysis to enable equipment reliability improvement, and repairs cathodic protection equipment, ensuring a cost effective approach to asset longevity.
* Implements modifications to routine tasks related to production chemical support, supports vendor selection and qualification process, and actively participates in proactive safety and continuous improvement activities, demonstrating a visible commitment to EHS.
* Prioritizes, organizes, and completes basic assignments on time with some direction, frequently seeking guidance from experienced peers when faced with routine problems in chemical processes.
* Possesses the right and obligation to stop work in unsafe conditions, contributing to a safe and secure working environment for all personnel.
Education:
* High School Diploma/General Education Diploma (GED)/Higher Secondary education and/or commensurate work experience is required. Associate's Degree in Engineering, Business Administration or any other related discipline is preferred.
Experience:
* 0-3 years of relevant experience with an Associate's Degree in Engineering, Business Administration or any other related discipline, otherwise 9+ years of relevant production operations experience, preferably in E&P Operations specializing in areas Chemical Treatment Processes, Equipment Maintenance, Process Optimization or a related field. Industry experience is preferred.
