Definition

Position Snapshot/A Day in the Life: The Engineering Technician II performs routine drafting and technical engineering work in support of municipal infrastructure projects. Responsibilities include assisting with engineering design and planning, providing customer service, and performing technical office and field duties related to updating, maintaining, and analyzing the Public Works and Engineering Department's Geographic Information System (GIS) and utility infrastructure data. This position coordinates and conducts research, field data collection, and condition assessments of infrastructure assets, using GIS, database, and information management tools to support capital planning and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
Essential Functions
Engineering Technician II -This is the full journey level in the Engineering Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Engineering Technician I By the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including the moderately complex duties of drafting, office and field engineering work. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is flexibly staffed and is normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, requires previous work experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Incumbent must have the ability to:
Review and process tract maps, parcel maps, of line adjustments, grants of easement, and street right-of-ways for recordation.
Verify fulfillment of conditions of approval for new subdivisions; perform on-site inspections to verify survey monuments related to parcel maps and lot line adjustments.
Prepare and draft technical engineering plans for construction of streets, alleys, storm drains, water lines, and other public improvements.
Provide public assistance at counter and over the telephone.
Prepare quantity and cost estimates for engineering projects.
Maintain a variety of maps and records including tract maps, parcel maps, lot line adjustments, easements, street and address changes.
Review engineering plans to determine appropriate layout of construction projects.
Perform on-site inspections to obtain information; determine angles and set grade stakes, hubs, turning points and benchmarks using appropriate surveying techniques; locate and measure boundary lines, right-of-ways, and land grades.
Make and check mathematical calculations related to surveying, drafting and basic engineering.
Maintain accurate survey records in the form of field notes and sketches.
Participate in a variety of engineering design and planning work related to municipal engineering projects.
Answer questions and provide information to the public concerning engineering activities.
Assist in development and maintenance of the record keeping and filing systems.
Prepare, assemble and distribute copies of maps, charts and blueprints.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision when preparing and reading written reports and other work related documents. Acute hearing is also required when providing phone and counter assistance.

What You'll Do:
Ensure Quality Control. Conduct routine testing of in-process materials, raw materials, environmental samples, and finished materials to ensure quality control of products at the point of production, shipping, and arrival upon the job site. Adhere to testing methods, including American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Department of Transportation (DOT).
Document and Report Information. Complete all required reports in a timely and accurate manner, interpreting, documenting, and storing the results. Communicate test results in a timely manner to the supervisor and properly document in a database.
Maintain Lab Standards. Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained in and around the lab. Troubleshoot problems and review basic product specifications. Inspect, calibrate, and maintain testing equipment periodically.
Monitor Stockpile. Inspect stockpiles, materials sources, and truckloads at plant sites. Monitor the daily construction of the stockpile to ensure that segregation and contamination is kept to a minimum or eliminated. Notify management immediately if contamination is identified.
Inspect Equipment and Structures. Conduct routine inspections of the plant equipment in order to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operations to maximize production and minimize interruptions.

Skills You'll Need:
Experience. Prior training or experience in the materials testing field is preferred. Knowledge of general principles and practices of aggregate production is preferred.
Travel. This role requires travel to various sites throughout Southern California. Must be willing to drive to these sites when needed and have a valid Driver's License.
Safety Knowledge. Must display knowledge and awareness of construction and mining site hazards.

About the Role:
Reporting to the Quality Manager role, the Quality ControlTechnician will monitor the quality of outgoing products through visual, dimensional, and functional inspections according to established specifications. This individual ensures that inspected products conform to McCrometer and customer expectations, specifications, and requirements. The role requires strong working knowledge of inspection processes, the ability to make sound decisions, accurately document results, and work under minimal supervision.
This position is part of the Quality Department, located in Hemet, CA, and will be on-site.
In this role, a typical day will look like:
· Promoting and maintaining quality standards and culture throughout the production and inspection processes.
· Reading and interpreting specifications, drawings, and work instructions to understand product requirements.
· Performing a variety of inspections-including visual, dimensional, functional, and conformance checks-to ensure products meet established specifications and regulatory requirements.
· Recording inspection results accurately and maintaining quality documentation in accordance with established standards.
· Reporting and communicating product rejections or non-conformances to relevant departments.
· Developing product inspection plans as part of continuous process improvement initiatives.
· Providing technical support for problem identification, leading root cause investigations, and supporting resolution of quality issues.
· Completing assignments related to internal defects and non-conformances, often requiring cross-functional coordination.
· Supporting Quality KPI targets and continuous improvement activities aligned with the Veralto Enterprise System (VES).
· Maintaining clean, safe, and organized work areas and assisting in training team members when needed.
The essential requirements of the job include:
· High school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred.
· Minimum of 2 years' experience in inspection, measurement, or monitoring work within a manufacturing environment.
· Strong mathematical skills and proficiency with spreadsheets (Excel) and Word.
· Solid understanding of mechanical assembly, testing, and inspection processes.
· Ability to read and interpret written instructions, blueprints, specifications, and sketches.
· Experience using precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.

Collaborate with Technical Directors and Project Architects to develop and maintain office-wide specification standards.
Review drawings, Revit models, and Keynote lists to ensure alignment with specifications, providing clear technical guidance across all project phases.
Perform Quality Control reviews at key milestones-evaluating code compliance, accessibility, constructability, life safety, and coordination across disciplines.
Use Revit and Bluebeam Sessions to review documentation and confirm comment resolution.
Support bidding and construction administration by assisting with RFIs, submittals, and product substitutions.
Participate in project and consultant coordination meetings, staying current with building codes, DSA requirements, and industry best practices.
Manage multiple active projects simultaneously, maintaining accuracy, consistency, and deadlines.

To Qualify, You Must Have:
A minimum of 10 years of relevant architectural experience, including at least 5 years of specification writing.
Experience preparing architectural specifications using AIA MasterSpec.
Strong understanding of building codes, materials, construction techniques, and sustainability requirements.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Bluebeam Revu, and specification editing software.
CSI certification preferred.
LEED Accreditation and/or CASp certification a plus.
Knowledge of DSA requirements preferred.
Knowledge of Revit and Revit add-ins for specifications and keynotes a plus.
A professional degree in Architecture is a plus.

Join an elite mission supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the Southern California region, where your precision and diligence will help maintain the highest standards of service across critical government facilities. As a Quality ControlTechnician with DAWSON, you will conduct field-level inspections, verify service performance, and document compliance across building systems and trades. Working under the Quality Control Manager, you will play a hands-on role in safeguarding contract integrity and ensuring facilities perform to federal, state, and CBP standards.
Location: Southern California (San Diego/El Centro Region)
Responsibilities:
Conduct field inspections on preventive maintenance, minor and intermediate repairs across mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and building systems.
Perform quality checks on completed work orders and service tickets, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and documentation alignment.
Maintain real-time records in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and track resolution of deficiencies.
Coordinate with the Quality Control Manager to assess trends, root causes, and identify areas for training or performance improvement.
Support internal audits and assist in the preparation of reports for CBP Contracting Officer Representatives (CORs).
Review subcontractor deliverables and ensure quality standards are upheld at all locations.
Escort subcontractors and vendors during site visits and work execution to ensure security compliance and adherence to site protocols.
Assist in verifying documentation for warranty compliance and regulatory certifications.
Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years of experience in facility maintenance quality assurance or trade inspections.
Familiarity with federal facility standards including OSHA, EPA, and NFPA codes.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, service manuals, and technical specifications.
Proficiency in using digital tools and CMMS platforms (TRIRIGA preferred).
Strong communication skills and attention to detail, with the ability to document findings clearly and concisely.
Additional Requirements:
Must be eligible for CBP background investigation and suitability clearance.
Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident with work authorization.
