Job Description
The person who holds this important role will manage the Quality Assurance and Food Safety functions for our branded, private label, gourmet/specialty, and foodservice products. You will also lead a team of QA supervisors and their staff and must have a background in consumer products with a strong knowledge of SQF, GMPs, labeling laws, HAACP, GFSI certification with Six-Sigma, and Lean Manufacturing expertise.
Essence of this role:
Ensure the safety and quality of products throughout the entire production process, from raw materials to finished goods. This involves developing and implementing quality assurance policies, monitoring production processes, conducting audits, and managing a team of quality control personnel. Additionally, the QA Manager will be the primary SQF practitioner and central driver for site SQF requirements.
Essential Duties:
Overseeing the development, implementation, review, and maintenance of the SQF system, including food safety and food quality fundamentals, and updating all SQF documents, manuals, procedures, and forms
Owning and taking appropriate action to ensure the integrity of the SQF system
Communicating to relevant personnel all essential information to ensure the effective implementation and maintenance of the SQF system
Serving as the central driver for all SQF requirements
Maintaining a library of all SQF documents and requirements
Managing ongoing audits of SQF Policies and Procedures
Planning, implementing, and conducting annual audits of each department to ensure SQF compliance
Maintaining and updating training documentation
Assisting with the management of HACCP, GMPs, and the new product specification system
Supporting and assisting with Lean Manufacturing and Six-Sigma
Other Duties:
Formulates and maintains quality assurance objectives for our Retail, Foodservice, and Gourmet/Contract businesses to ensure quality goals are met
Develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring work activities to include weight control, moisture, degree of roast, and caffeine analysis, as well as assists in sanitation, overall food quality, and food safety programs
Facilitates all food safety and quality related audits for the facility
Manages, plans, coordinates, and directs the quality assurance technicians designed to ensure continuous production and service consistent with established quality standards
Interfaces with key customers and their quality teams relating to compliance standards
Supervises the development and analysis of statistical data and specifications to determine present standards and establish proposed quality and reliability expectations
Utilizes quality data to drive improvements in the operation
Manages the overall plant sanitation and food safety programs; therefore, a strong knowledge of GMPs, labeling laws, HACCP, GFSI certification requirements, as well as Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing expertise is required
Processes and assists in sampling for sales / customers
Manages and assists with customer complaints and/or questions relating to MZB-USA's brands, private label, and foodservice; assists with customer letters and product samples when needed
Participates in cupping finished product
Qualifications & Requirements:
BS/BA degree in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field required
Minimum 5-7 years of experience in managing a quality assurance function inside a food and beverage, flavor house, or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment
SQF, Six-Sigma, and Lean Manufacturing experience required
PCQI and HACCP Certifications required
Excellent verbal and written communication skills needed
Strong leadership skills a must
Must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work well managing many priorities
Must have Microsoft Office proficiencies, with the ability to create pivot tables (Excel) and PowerPoint presentations
Able to work independently, as well as maintain collaborative and constructive working relationships with people at all levels of the organization (inside and outside of the company)

Primary Responsibilities
Quality Systems & Compliance
Execute and maintain the Food Safety Plan (FSMA 21 CFR 117): monitoring, verification, corrective actions, reanalysis cadence, and training records.
Run the hold/release process for bulk and finished goods; evaluate COAs, in-house data, deviations, and change control; document disposition decisions.
Coordinate and document internal audits, mock recalls, and trace exercises; keep evidence inspection-ready for customer, certification (SQF/BRCGS), and regulatory audits.
Manage document control: SOPs, forms, logs, specifications, label/claim checks, and training records.
Lead or support NCR, RCCA/CAPA, effectiveness checks, and trend analysis.
Support supplier and incoming verification activities with Purchasing/FSVP owners.
Laboratory Competency (Backup Coverage)
Perform routine food chemistry methods and daily checks, including:
Auto-titration for acid value, free fatty acids, peroxide value; pH meter use and calibration
UV-Vis spectrophotometry for absorbance-based assays
NIR/FTIR screening for identity/spec conformance
Karl Fischer moisture/volatiles; loss-on-drying ovens and balances
Basic operation checks for GC-FID or HPLC methods (sample prep, sequence loading, data review) with established SOPs
Maintain calibration and verification logs; execute basic preventive maintenance and coordinate service when needed
Prepare samples, manage external testing, reconcile COAs, and uphold data integrity (ALCOA+)
Data, Reporting & Collaboration
Enter, verify, and trend QA/QC data in QMS/LIMS/ERP; maintain master specs and release statuses.
Train operators/techs on SOPs, GMP checks, and simple analytical tasks; partner with Production, Supply Chain, and Maintenance to prevent recurrence of issues.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology or related; equivalent experience considered.
2-5 years in food or ingredient QA/QC with documented experience operating and maintaining lab equipment listed above.
PCQI credential or ability to complete within 90 days of hire; working knowledge of HACCP and preventive controls.
Demonstrated competency with at least two instrument classes from: auto-titrators, UV-Vis, NIR/FTIR, Karl Fischer, GC-FID, HPLC.
Strong grasp of FDA CGMPs, sanitation verification, allergen management, traceability, and recall documentation.
Intermediate Excel (lookups, pivots, charts) and experience with QMS/LIMS/ERP for specs, holds, and traceability.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in edible oils/fats, dressings/sauces, beverages, dairy, or ingredient manufacturing.
SQF/BRCGS internal auditor training; prior customer or certification audit participation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Must NOT be allergic to peanuts
* Ability to provide correct and accurate production paperwork to the floor in a timely fashion.
* Accurately use raw peanut lab results to adjust formulations when required.
* Accurately completed all Quality reporting forms
* Verify that finished peanut butter LOTS are correct. This includes all aspects of the peanut including sensory evaluation, grind, labels, best by dates, DOM, lids, containers, coding, drum seals etc

* Properly identify materials that are non-conforming. Lead efforts to get non-conforming materials on HOLD; including physically tagging items, filling out quality alert and other required documentation.
* Perform visual pre-operational sanitation inspections prior to beginning of the day's production to ensure food safety"
* Work with production supervision to get the line up and running if it is stopped for quality or food safety concerns.

Works on assignments that are moderately difficult and require judgement in resolving issues or in making recommendations.
Skilled in planning, managing, directing resources and managing projects.
Has the ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community
Confers with Engineers to investigate equipment failures and difficulties to analyze and provide technical recommendations and design changes.
Develops manufacturing procedures and processes to ensure that production goals are met.
Independently collaborates with multiple departments to manage medium to large scale projects.
Researches and analyzes Field and Customer proposals, specifications, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
Attends and provides manufacturing approval at design reviews.
Level 4 (Senior):
All duties of Manufacturing Engineer Level 3 plus:
Requires little to no supervision.
Effectively communicates and manages projects with Suppliers, Purchasing and Engineering.
Trains, mentors, and develops peers and other personnel on processes and procedures, resolves failures and system malfunctions, and provides technical guidance.
Reviews and approves processes, corrective actions, and product designs for manufacturability.
Leads the investigation of failures and difficulties to provide technical recommendations for design changes.
Provides feedback on customer problems and needs. Works to develop corrective and preventative actions for customer's issues relating to manufacturing.
Competencies
Education and Experience:
Level 1 - Bachelor's degree (BS) engineering or AS in engineering related discipline with two years of engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Level 2 - Bachelor's degree (BS) in Engineering with two years of applicable engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Level 3 - Bachelor's degree (BS) in Engineering with four years of applicable engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Level 4 (Senior) - Bachelor's degree (BS) in Engineering with six years of applicable engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Level 1:
Knowledge of fundamental engineering and project management concepts and practices.
Knowledge of ERP LN system as it relates to mining truck Bill of Materials (BOM) structure and inventory control.
Excellent communication (oral & written) skills.
Ability to read and interpret technical documents such as engineering specifications, drawings, blue prints, procedures, and manuals.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as algebra, probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Products including: Outlook, Project, Word, Excel, and Power Point
