1898

1899

South Australian oyster fishers with their gear (top; State Library of SA, B54098) and a snippet from a late 19th century newspaper article airing concerns about the overexploitation of oyster reefs (Adelaide Observer, 14 January 1899).

1910

Sperry Gyrocompass was founded in 1910 by American Elmer Ambrose Sperry to manufacture his inventions of navigation equipment.

1917

The Commandant of the Marine Corps established Marine Barracks Quantico on May 14, 1917.

1920

In 1920, Marine Corps Schools was founded, and in the words of then-Chief of Staff for Quantico, Col.

1941

When the headquarters of the FMF left in 1941, Quantico’s main task became the education of individual Marines, rather than the large unit training it had conducted in the past.

1947

In 1947, Quantico Marines conceived of carrying troops from ship-to-shore by helicopter and formed a special squadron to test the idea: Marine Helicopter Squadron-1, commonly referred to now as HMX-1.

1949

Decca Radar launched its first marine radar, the 159, in August 1949.

1960

Since 1960, North Sea cod (Gadus morhua) has experienced phases of expansion, overfishing, and recovery.

1968

1, 1968, the base was re-designated the Marine Corps Development and Education Command (MCDEC) in the spirit of the command motto, “Semper Progredi” — Always Forward.

1981

The boat was sold by the firm in the mid 30s and all contact was lost until 1981, when the new owners, Max and Jackie Pentecost of Wilmington, California, contacted the Sea-Dog Line.

1987

During the summer of 1987, Quantico planners studied more efficient and streamlined ways in which MCDEC could ensure the Marine Corps of the future would be the best trained, led, disciplined, and equipped fighting force on the planet.

1989

Marine Corps University was also established in 1989 to provide the structure and policy for professional military education Corps-wide.

1990

The Marine Corps Research, Development and Acquisition Command, the precursor to today’s Marine Corps Systems Command, began moving to Quantico in 1990.

1994

Quality Marine Services Pte Ltd was founded in 1994, with 4 staff, in the servicing field of Marine Navigation and Communication Equipment.

1997

The Department of Defense established the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate in 1997 to provide the military with greater flexibility in dealing with the challenges of Military Operations Other Than War.

Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine was formed in 1997 from three well-known names in the marine industry: Sperry Gyrocompass, C. Plath and Decca.

1998

In 1998, Headquarters Marine Corps moved Manpower and Reserve Affairs (M&RA) and Marine Corps Recruiting Command to Quantico from the Navy Annex in Arlington, Va.

2001

Headquartered in the United Kingdom, Sperry Marine is since 2001 part of Northrop Grumman Corporation and is a worldwide supplier of navigation, communication, information and automation systems for commercial marine and naval markets.

2011

1, 2015, Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico was designated Marine Corps Installations Command-National Capital Region - Marine Corps Base Quantico (MCINCR-MCB Quantico).

2016

Data extracted from short, popular newspaper articles describing this fishery formed an important source of information in the Thurstan et al. (2016) study on long-term trends in snapper fisheries.

As of 2016, Quantico is home to over 28,000 military, civilian, and contractor personnel.

2017

The base will celebrate its centennial in 2017.

2020

Marine Knowledge 2020 in EU context, see Box 1), and increased awareness, known as “ocean literacy”.

Importantly, this included the regulation of minimum landing sizes for all commercial elasmobranch species as an environmental target to be met by 2020 within Italy's implementation of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Theme 6 Human dimensions and governance).
