GENERAL SUMMARY The Radiological Technologist performs radiologic procedures and examinations under the direction of radiologists or delegating practitioner to produce radiographic studies which are used in medical diagnosis to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions, or lesions within the body. Reports to department leadership. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provides services using imaging modalities including but not limited to conventional x-ray, Computed Radiography (CR), Digital Radiography (DR), Fluoroscopy, Bone Density, and Urodynamics. Maintains and applies knowledge of radiation protection standards; knowledge of the function of the major divisions of the skeletal system and major organs; and knowledge of the physical concept of energy and the property of X-rays and electric circuits to perform diagnostic procedures and to assist as a member of a medical team in radiologic examinations. Provides services within and inpatient, Operating Room (OR), Emergency Department (ED), and outpatient setting. Evaluates radiographs for technical quality. Performs, assists, and accountable for various clinical laboratory procedures including but not limited to specimen collection, processing, storage, handling, and transporting of specimens. Exercises professional judgment in the performance of radiographic procedures. Provides patient care essential to radiographic procedures. Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate action. Supports successful onboarding, orientations, training of new Radiology modality team members. Performs all other duties as assigned. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Required Licenses and/or Certifications Current licensure as a Radiologic Technologist by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) required at the time of hire. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training required at time of hire or must be obtained within 45 days of hire. Preferred Licenses and/or Certifications None preferred. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Required Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required at the time of hire. At time of hire, a record of completion for all education, licenses, training and/or certifications is required. Continuous certification and/or maintenance of state licensures, certifications, training, educational and application requirements is required during employment. Preferred Education and Experience None required. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of diagnostic radiology principles and procedures as well as operation and maintenance of radiologic equipment. Highly motivated, enthusiastic, and empathetic team player who takes initiative. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. Excellent time management skills, able to shift priorities and able to work independently and problem solve in a fast paced, fluid environment. Possesses strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills as well as, the ability interact with and build collegial relationships with diverse individuals. Analytical skills necessary to determine best method of providing requested radiographs based on the individual. WORKING CONDITIONS Radiology/Imaging areas work environment with rare exposure to physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from specimens and chemicals. Occasional exposure to infectious agents when handling specimens or hazardous materials but potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Regular exposure to radiation. Minimum chance of injury once established safety procedures are followed. Ability to stand for long periods of time wearing a lead apron. Ability to lift or turn disabled patients. Although radiation hazards exist in this occupation, they are minimized by the use of lead aprons, gloves, and other shielding devices, and by instruments monitoring exposure to radiation. Radiation exposure badges must be worn to measure radiation levels in the radiation area. Send appropriate image series to the radiologist for reading via the PACS according to department protocol. Receive patients and explain procedures providing humane and appropriate care and communication to alleviate fear of the examination. Correctly position the patient for the examination and make technical adjustments necessary for the required examination. Determine if any special patient preparation is required. Process digital images and submit for interpretation by radiologists. Document all procedures and maintain records in accordance with the SOP manual for the department. Assist in coordinating schedules, daily logs, and data submission for monthly reports. Perform Acute Care diagnostic studies and procedures. These studies shall include all variances of extremities, chest, abdomen and head. Research, develop, and formulate new techniques for routine diagnostic procedures as required for performing emergent types of examinations. Perform system calibrations and quality control tasks according to the manufacturer and command instructions daily. Recognize artifacts and equipment errors and notify designated Government personnel of outlying values. Knowledge of this older technology and equipment is required. Perform routine radiologic procedures ordered by the medical staff for the inmate population at the institution. Transmit, retrieve X-ray images and reports electronically, and scan reports into inmates' Bureau Electronic Medical Record (BEMR). Receive training to retrieve radiographic consults from BEMR and schedule them to perform all radiographic procedures. Work with an inmate population from a variety of cultural, racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds. Evaluate radiographic equipment for calibrations and repairs. Possess knowledge of basic emergency situations that may occur during special radiographic procedures. Schedule exams and maintain records. Possess knowledge of various pathological abnormalities as demonstrated by radiographic imaging. Independently assess and select technical exposure factors and positions necessary to obtain a proper quality diagnostic exam. Receive patients and explain procedures to alleviate undue anxiety. Independently perform all radiographic procedures; i.e., chest, bone, skull, spine, and portable x-rays, etc. Notify Radiologist, or referring Physician of any preliminary abnormalities seen while patient is undergoing an exam, so that additional views, or exams can be ordered if needed. Coordinate transfer of patient radiologic records to ensure continuity of care. Work with Clinical Director to ensure monitoring and evaluation activities are completed. Act as liaison between radiologist and medical staff. Receive training and orientation and comply with correctional techniques as they pertain to medical services. Develop a working knowledge of the local medical protocols.
