We’re currently seeking General Laborers – Car Runner to join our team.

The General Laborer – Car Runner is responsible for unloading vehicles (driving) from railcars.

General Laborer – Car Runner

· Frequently climbs up/down railcars to access vehicles

· Drives vehicles off railcars to parking areas within the yard

· Removes and applies tie-down devices from vehicles

· Opens and closes railcar doors

· Inspects vehicles for damage

Requirements

· Valid Driver’s License

· Ability to lift 40lbs. over head while standing

· Physically & mentally able to climb ladders, 20 feet

· Manual transmission experience preferred, not required

· Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

· Willingness to complete a criminal background, drug screen and physical

Spring railroad worker job description

Travel: 85-100% This position requires extensive travel.

Summary: Responsible for performing general labor as part of a team that is responsible for track projects including construction, maintenance, inspections, and service. Utilizing hand and power tools.

PRIMARY/ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cleans and prepares construction site
  • Digging ditches, trenches, backfills excavations and compacts and levels earth to grade specifications, using necessary tools
  • Work with Operators to facilitate alignment, movement and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials
  • Loads, unloads materials, machinery, and tools as necessary
  • Driving spikes
  • Moving and setting cross ties and lengths of steel rail
  • Shoveling stone
  • Adjusting switches
  • Lubricating switches
  • Tightening track bolts
  • Carrying track jack (approx. 50 lbs.)
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Write simple correspondence
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization
  • Perform basic mathematics to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Comply with all rules and regulations and instructions
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Troubleshoot issues and deal with typical problems that occur in track maintenance in the field

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma/GED preferred
  • Military Experience would be helpful
  • Experience preferred but not necessary

PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move heavy weights. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and may be required to work nights, holidays, and weekends. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. May be exposed to live track/trains and high voltage. Exposure to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather.
