1967

While working for a tie company, he was inspired to begin designing his own neckwear, and in 1967 he went into business for himself, marketing his unique line of ties under the name Polo.

The business began in 1967, whilst Lauren was working at Beau Brummel.

1968

Drawing on his interests in sports, Lauren named his first full line of menswear "Polo" in 1968.

1969

By 1969, the Manhattan department store Bloomingdale's sold Lauren's men line exclusively.

1970

In 1970, the Polo by Ralph Lauren shop opened in Bloomingdale’s, marking the legendary store’s first-ever boutique devoted to a single designer.

1971

In 1971 his first standalone store opened on Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive, and Lauren debuted his first collection for women.

In 1971, Ralph Lauren Corporation launched a line of tailored shirts for women, which introduced the Polo player emblem, appearing on the shirt cuff.

1972

In 1977, Diane Keaton and Woody Allen wore Lauren's clothes in the Oscar-winning film, Annie Hall.

1978

In 1978, the brand was the first to launch a men’s and women’s fragrance at the same time.

1981

The company entered the European market, and went international, in 1981 with the opening of the first freestanding store in New Bond Street in the West End of London, England.

1983

Seeing how his clothing was associated with a certain lifestyle, starting in 1983 he expanded his business to include a range of home accessories that would eventually include pillows, throws, bed and bath products, furniture, and household paint.

1984

Evoking Ralph’s vision of an African safari, the Spring 1984 Collection, and its subsequent ad campaign, anticipate the award-winning film Out of Africa, which comes out the following year.

1986

He had seven Coty design awards and was inducted into the Coty Hall of Fame in 1986.

John Fairchild, chairman of Women's Wear Daily, called it "The best boutique in America, probably the world." Consumers responded, spending over $5 billion a year by 1997 to have the Lauren look and making him the best-selling designer in the world.

By 1997 investment bankers were fighting for the opportunity to help Lauren put his company on the stock market.

1998

Wearing a pink gown that Ralph designed for the occasion, Gwyneth earns an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in 1998’s Shakespeare in Love.

1999

The 98-seat restaurant, RL, opened in March 1999 in Chicago adjacent to its largest and world flagship Ralph Lauren store at the corner of Chicago and Michigan Avenues on the Magnificent Mile.

2000

Launched in 2000, Pink Pony is Lauren’s venture in the global fight against cancer.

In 2000 the company's Web site, Polo.com , was introduced, allowing online access to all Ralph Lauren products.

2001

The charitable Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation was established in 2001.

2003

In 2003 the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care opened in New York, pledging to provide the highest quality cancer screening and treatment services to patients living in Harlem and its surrounding communities.

2008

The brand designs looks for the United States Olympic and Paralympic teams as they walk the opening and closing ceremonies, along with an assortment of villagewear, at the Olympic Summer Games Beijing 2008.

2014

2015

In September 2015, it was announced that Stefan Larsson would replace the company's founder, Ralph Lauren, as CEO in November.

2017

In February 2017 it was announced that Larsson had agreed to leave his position as CEO effective May 1, 2017 due to differences with Lauren.

On May 17, 2017, Ralph Lauren named Patrice Louvet President and Chief Executive Officer.

2018

Lauren went high tech for the 2018 Olympic Winter games, designing parkas for Team USA featuring wearable technology that can provide up to 11 hours of electronically controlled warmth via an exclusive on-board heating system.

2019

In 2019, the documentary Very Ralph debuted on HBO, revealing the man behind the icon and the creation of one of the most True Fashionista brands in fashion history.

Lauren also received the title of honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 2019, becoming the first American fashion designer to be so honoured.

2021

In May 2021, Ralph Lauren Corporation announced it would sell its Club Monaco brand to private equity firm Regent LP.
