Full Time - Hourly
At Hormel Foods, base pay is one part of our total compensation package. The base hiring pay for this role is $19.75 per hour.

Purpose of Position:
General labor to assist Farm Manager and Farm Assistant Manager in achieving required work goals. This includes, but is not limited to, daily chores, running machinery and equipment, and handle and care for live turkeys. This position will require light paperwork, some math skills, walking on uneven surfaces frequently, lifting, twist, bending and squatting frequently and varying temperature environments.
Principle Accountabilities:
Help perform daily chores as assigned by farm management.
Assist with maintaining litter for optimal conditions for turkeys.
Record daily information in flock books for record keeping.
Operate machinery and equipment when required.
Follow all safety protocols and guidelines - wearing all required PPE ( safety glasses, respiratory equipment, etc).
Follow all Live Production processes and procedures.
Follow all biosecurity guidelines, including, but not limited to, showering before work each day, not wearing personal shoes on farm, using company provided boots on farm and in barns, wearing provided scrubs/coveralls in barns.
Perform other duties as instructed and assigned by management.
Handle and care for live turkeys in accordance with established animal welfare guidelines.
Have open communication with fellow employees and farm management.
Conduct self in a positive, team oriented manner.
Minimum Qualification:
Must have reliable means of transportation to and from assigned farm.
Good previous attendance records (school and/or previous employment).
Able to work 7 days/week with some varied hours and with some weekends and holidays.
Possess a level of math, reading, and writing skills necessary to successfully perform record keeping task required of the position.
Able to lift up to 40 lbs from floor to waist height frequently, with occasional lifts from floor to full extension.
Able to wear eye and respiratory protection equipment on a continuous basis.
Able to walk on uneven surfaces.
Preferred qualifications:
Valid drivers license.
High school diploma, or actively enrolled in high school, or equivalent.

What You'll Do
As a Farm Hand, you will support and oversee the day-to-day operation of a fully functioning livestock and crop farm. Your responsibilities include:
Performing daily farm chores: feeding, watering, cleaning, and animal handling
Assisting with seasonal harvesting, hay baling, and crop care
Monitoring animal health and behavior, especially during calving season
Operating and maintaining farm machinery (tractors, ATVs, spreaders, loaders, etc.)
Performing light mechanical repairs and routine service on farm equipment to ensure reliability
Maintaining clean and safe animal habitats and farm facilities
Recording data, restocking supplies, and keeping inventory
Supporting team members and being available for additional coverage as needed
Providing on-site oversight and stepping in independently when required
Assisting during weekend feedings, early mornings, evenings, and urgent tasks
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who:
Is at least 18 years old
Can work independently with strong initiative and accountability
Has 1+ year experience in agriculture, livestock care, or a similar role
Is comfortable with livestock handling (cattle, pigs, poultry)
Can operate farm equipment and basic tools safely and effectively
Brings practical mechanical know-how, with experience troubleshooting and repairing tractors or other agricultural machinery considered a strong plus
Is capable of lifting 50 lbs. and performing repetitive physical work
Can adapt to variable hours, weather conditions, and farm priorities
Has reliable transportation and can pass a drug screening
Holds a high school diploma or equivalent (or is currently enrolled)
Schedule & Hours
🗓 Typical Weekly Hours: 40+ (Varies Seasonally)
⏰ Winter Hours: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
☀️ Summer Hours: 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM / as late as 9:00 PM based on workload
📅 Days: Monday-Friday, plus weekend mornings/evenings and as needed
🐄 Additional hours required during calving season, emergencies, and harvest time
📍 This role is on-site and requires year-round commitment

Located in northern Westchester County, Shrub Oak offers unparalleled educational opportunities for autistic students in a family-centric, supportive environment. Under the direction of the Farm Manager, the Farmhand's responsibility is to assist in supporting and caring for a growing livestock program (i.e., sheep, chickens, goats, donkeys, horses). In addition, the care and upkeep of our garden, greenhouse, and any other new farm-related programs. The Farm Hand will, at times, supervise students at the farm and incorporate the farm as an integral Shrub Oak asset, which will be used to educate and support the individualized skill-based development of Shrub Oak students.
Essential Functions - Primary duties of the position
As per the Farm Manager's discretion, they will be expected to perform all required animal husbandry for Shrub Oak's farm animals, which may include but not be limited to: Sheep, Goats, Donkeys and Chickens, and Horses which includes but is not limited to:
Ensuring the appropriate feeding and watering of farm animals.
Cleaning and disinfecting the yards and living areas of farm animals.
Proactively examine animals to detect symptoms of illness, injury, or disease, and check physical characteristics to ensure appropriate growth and health.
Provide medical treatment, such as administering medications.
Groom, clip, trim animals, and/or shear coats to collect hair as needed and appropriate.
Herd animals to pastures for grazing or to other enclosures.
Shift animals between grazing areas to ensure sufficient access to food, and plant, harvest and inspect crops by hand.
Assist in the Little Oak Farm Market when needed as well as complete tasks involved with the market.
Ensuring all plants in specified areas are always watered and maintained
Assist in planting, watering, and landscaping in the garden.
Supervise and Support the Clinical Department during Farm and Garden sessions.
Assist the Farm Assistant Manager with classes on an as need basis.
Follow a cohesive hands-on program encompassing all farm programs, including Livestock and Horticulture.
Perform any and all other responsibilities as may be required and needed.

Physical Requirements/Demands:
