Rancho Bernardo Inn company history timeline

1821

After Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, the mission lands came under the control of the new Mexican government, which offered massive tracts of land to anyone agreeing to settle on and work the lands.

1837

In 1837 Snook had married Maria Antonia Alvarado, the daughter of a prominent San Diego family.

1846

Then in 1846 Snook went to sea again.

1852

John Snook died in 1852.

1862

Maria Snook died in 1862.

1867

In 1867 they sold the rancho to Thomas Fox, representing the interests of James McCoy.

1872

The Bernardo Post Office opened for business on December 3, 1872 inside his farmhouse.

1919

Its demise was hastened by the growth of the city of Escondido a few miles north and the completion of the Lake Hodges Dam and Reservoir in 1919.

1943

George Daley bought Rancho San Bernardo outright in 1943.

1956

Art Wall Jr., winner of 1 major golf championship—The Masters Tournament in 1956.

1961

The community plan was submitted to the city of San Diego in late 1961 as part of Rancho Bernardo, Inc.’s proposal for annexation, the ranch at that time being unincorporated county land.

1961: Brothers Donald and Lawrence Daley partnered with Harry Summers and W.R. “Fritz” Hawn to transform their family estate into a planned community that featured an opulent boutique hotel at its center.

1962

The first sales office for the new community opened in July 1962 at the intersection of Rancho Bernardo and Pomerado Roads.

In 1962, the Daleys and their partners received permission to start building their planned town of Rancho Bernardo.

1963

The Rancho Bernardo Women’s Golf Club was founded in 1963 by a dedicated group of women golfers at the then-new Rancho Bernardo Golf Course in northern San Diego County.

21, 1963, at the Poway Bowl, according to the Bernardo Brandings, a monthly newspaper published for the new Rancho Bernardo community.

Membership in the RB Women’s Golf Club numbered 84 in its first year, according to the 1963 Club Year Book.

Through Labor Day one of the anniversary promotions includes one night at the 1963 rate when two nights at the present-day rate are booked.

1964

By mid-1964, the community had grown to 2,000 residents.

The resort gained notoriety on a national level by hosting the PGA San Diego Open in 1964.

1968

In 1968 NCR became the first corporate tenant in the Rancho Bernardo Industrial Park.

In 1968, Rancho Bernardo Inn was expanded to 151 guest rooms and our beloved El Bizcocho was opened.

1970

When purchased in 1970 by JC Resorts, Gates said there was around 150 guest rooms.

1975

1975: James Colachis of JC Resorts reached a deal to acquire the Rancho Bernardo Inn.

1978

1978: Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course began hosting the LPGA Honda Civic Classic annually for the next three years.

In 1978, Sally Little wins, defeating Nancy Lopez with a par on the first extra hole.

1982

1982: JC Resorts expanded the inn by adding two more guestroom buildings.

1988

1988: Seeking to enhance the Rancho Bernardo Inn’s timeless elegance, JC Resorts expanded the facility to feature 287 guestrooms.

1990

A decade later, the Club again changed its name, this time to Rancho Bernardo Inn Women’s Golf Club, which continues today. (For one year — 1990 — the Club changed its name to the Rancho Bernardo Inn Women’s Golf Association.)

2003

2003: Patrick Ponsaty, Executive Chef of El Bizcocho, named ‘Best Chef of America’ by the James Beard Foundation.

2007

2007: JC Resorts expanded the spa to include a saline pool, cabanas, seven indoor treatment rooms, and five outdoor casitas.

A $28 million major renovation was completed in 2007 that included building the spa and Aragon Ballroom.

2009

2009: JC Resorts continued to remodel the Rancho Bernardo Inn, renovating “The Veranda” into the “Veranda Fireside Lounge & Restaurant.” The company also reopened “The Sports Bar” as “The Bar,” too.

2012

2012: With food trends shifting to a more social experience, JC Resorts made the difficult decision to close El Bizcocho.

2013

In 2013, with food trends shifting to a more social, sharing experience, El Bizcocho was respectfully put to rest.

2020

2021

2021: Rancho Bernardo Inn joined Historic Hotels of America.
