The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) has two 100% remote 10-week summer research internship positions opening up. The internships are an opportunity to gain hands-on experience by assisting in research projects, engaging in literature reviews, data collection, data analysis, reporting, and potentially contributing to conference presentations and/or publications.
The Intern Research Associate program at the AOA is for those currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD program in fields such as psychometrics, measurement, statistics, l/O psychology, or data science. This fully remote 10-week internship beginning June 2026 involves working closely with experienced psychometricians and assessment experts. Interns will gain hands-on experience with AOA data and research projects that support the organization's mission of advancing the distinctive philosophy and practice of osteopathic medicine. The Certifying Board Services (CBS) department serves 73 certification and certificate programs across 15 specialty certifying boards.
Interns will work and collaborate with the psychometric and assessment teams of the CBS department to support the AOA's research agenda. The role provides an opportunity to support operational and research initiatives and offers practical experience in certification testing. Research topics may include exam design and development, administration and supportive validity studies for our certification and osteopathic continuing certification exams.
Responsibilities
Interns will work closely with the psychometric and assessment teams to develop a research plan for the internship.
Over the 10 weeks, interns will attend weekly meetings with their supervisor to discuss progress and address questions, and with one or more research project teams to discuss ongoing work.
Activities may include conducting and writing literature reviews, data gathering/cleaning, programming in R or Python, item and exam analyses with CTT and IRT, performing statistical analyses such as DIF or regression analysis, writing reports, and delivering presentations.
At the conclusion of the internship, all files and equipment will be returned to the AOA.

Candidates must be actively pursuing a Master's or PhD degree in Educational Measurement, Statistics, I/O Psychology, or a related field and have completed a minimum of 75% of required coursework towards their Master's or 50% of required coursework towards their Ph.D.
Recommendation of advisor, department chair, or other academic recommendation from current program of study
Familiarity with Item Response Theory (IRT), Rasch modeling, Classical Test Theory, DIF analysis, and psychometric principles
Intermediate programming skills in R and/or Python

The project aims to model societies as computational systems, examining how they process and store information to adapt to dynamic environments while leveraging increasing computational power to extract more energy from the environment in order to sustain and grow. By combining insights from theoretical computer science, social science, stochastic thermodynamics and complex systems research more broadly, this work seeks to uncover how social complexity scales with population size, energy systems, economic development, and technological advancements. The research also aims to illuminate both historical transitions and pressing contemporary challenges, such as the societal impacts of AI and other transformative technologies.
Responsibilities:
Collaborate with PIs Kyle Harper and David Wolpert along with other team members to advance this project through research, publication, workshop organization, etc.;
Collaborate with social scientists to model social systems as computational processes;
Collaborate with social scientists to apply theoretical computer science tools to develop understanding of how the intrinsic computational limitations of human social systems depend on the sizes, communication networks, technologies, etc., of those social systems.

The laboratory of Dr. Elaine F. Reed is seeking applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar position within the Division of The Immunogenetics Center, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM), at the University of California, Los Angeles. DGSOM is one of the most renowned public medical schools ranking 5th in the US and UCLA is the #1 ranked US public University. The lab is part of the Immunology, Inflammation, Infection and Transplantation Research Theme (I3T) located in the state-of-the-art South Tower CHS research building known for its multi-disciplinary and collaborative environment. As a curiosity-driven transplant and systems immunology lab, we are broadly interested in uncovering mechanisms of alloimmune responses to the allograft and tolerance induction. We use systems immunology approaches including multiparameter immunophenotyping, transcriptomics, proteomics, leukocyte functional assays, and statistical and computational biology to define mechanisms of cellular and humoral immunity to the transplanted organ and how alloimmunity is suppressed in patients receiving donor hematopoietic stem cells. In addition, the lab is using novel, spatial omics approaches to more comprehensively understand transplant pathology. The main goal is to identify and validate novel biomarkers of cellular and humoral rejection and tolerance induction that can inform both diagnostic precision and the development of appropriate treatment strategies in transplant immunology.

Position description
Postdoctoral positions are available in the lab of Dr. Mireille Kamariza at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), located in the Bioengineering Department. Leveraging chemical biology and fluorescence imaging techniques, we are developing a new platform to detect tuberculosis (TB) drug resistance in patient samples. Poor diagnostic tools to detect active disease hamper TB control programs. Accurate detection of live Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) could therefore improve TB diagnosis and patient treatment. Postdoctoral fellows will work on interdisciplinary projects within a highly collaborative environment to identify optimal combinations of TB drugs, old and new. Using high-throughput image analysis or large-scale quantitative fluorescence analysis, candidates will decipher drug efficacy and efficiency and potentially gain mechanistic insights for designing novel therapeutic strategies. This project will equip the candidates with skills in microbiology, chemical and molecular biology.

About the Opportunity
The California Academy of Sciences seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher in California Indigenous Science to join an innovative project within the Institute for Biodiversity Science and Sustainability (IBSS). Reporting to Dr. Shannon Tushingham, Associate Curator of Anthropology, the candidate will co-design and implement a braided science program that integrates Indigenous knowledge and Western methods. Drawing on archaeological, ethnographic, oral history, and specimen-based phenology data, they will investigate climate-driven ecological changes in collaboration with culture-bearers-documenting and applying traditional ecological knowledge-while partnering with Indigenous communities to co-develop research objectives, methods, and outreach that honor local protocols, and contributing to peer-reviewed publications, scientific and public presentations, and both in-person and online educational programs. This full-time, two-year appointment requires a PhD, a strong publication record or equivalent community-engagement achievements, demonstrated success in ethical, community-based research with Indigenous partners, experience securing external funding, mentorship of students, and public outreach leadership. About the Opportunity
The Roopnarine Paleontology Lab at the California Academy of Sciences seeks an exceptional Post-Doctoral Research Associate with expertise in quantitative paleoecology. The applicant will join a new NSF-funded research project to address whether communities at certain times in the past, specifically during and immediately after mass extinctions, may have been structured and functioned differently from communities during more environmentally quiescent times. Food webs have emerged as a paleontologically accessible type of interspecific network, yet their reconstruction remains methodologically challenging. Reconstruction relies on modeling approaches to infer interspecific interactions, all of which operate under a uniformitarian assumption that the principles determining interspecific interactions have remained constant through time. We challenge that uniformitarian assumption by proposing a framework within which to test alternative principles of inferred species properties, particularly following extreme ecological disturbances, offering new insight into paleocommunity structure and function. We will examine late Permian and Early Triassic communities from South China and the northwestern United states, testing both uniformitarian and alternative models. Test systems include boundary- and mass extinction-spanning communities, as well as communities that represent early stages of recovery from the Permian-Triassic mass extinction.
Work will consist of paleocommunity reconstructions, model building and execution, and analytical methods development. The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in all project activities, including field work in China and the United States, travel to and presentation at professional meetings, and publication of project results. They will also assist with collections curation and digitization, project coordination, communication, outreach activities, and formal/informal education. The researcher will be co-mentored by Peter Roopnarine (California Academy of Sciences) and project co-PI Ashley Dineen (University of California Museum of Paleontology, Berkeley), and will have the opportunity to interact with both institutions.
This position is based in San Francisco, California. Staff are currently expected to work from the Academy offices at least 2-3 times per week, which may fluctuate based on business needs.
