Forsgate began in 1913 as a dairy farm owned by John A. Forster, chairman of the Crum & Forster Insurance Company.

WHEN the New Jersey Turnpike opened in 1951, traffic thundered uninterrupted through the rich, flat farmland of South Brunswick past the genteel country club known as Forsgate.
In 1961, the grandson of John Forster hired architect Hal Purdy to create an additional nine-hole golf course.

Not until 1967, at the bidding of the developers of the Rossmoor retirement village near Forsgate and of several smaller commercial projects springing up in the farmland, did the Turnpike Authority decided to build Exit 8A on a portion of the country-club property.
