Reach Out and Read company history timeline
Reach Out and Read was founded in 1989 to help families make reading a part of their routines, and to supply the books they need to get started.
Two Boston Medical Center pediatricians introduced the first Reach Out and Read program in 1989.
The Boston based not-for-profit Reach Out and Read program began in 1989 to champion the positive effects of daily reading and to help to get books into children’s hands.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has officially endorsed the Reach Out and Read model since 1998.
Our first program launched in 1998 at Blank's Children's Hospital, distributing 3,551 books within their first year.
By 2001, Reach Out & Read had 1,456 programs sites in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, distributing 1.6 million books.
On November 8, 2011, Reach Out and Read San Diego, a program of the American Academy of Pediatrics, CA Chapter 3, received a Proclamation from the County of San Diego honoring Family Literacy Month.

On September 23, 2014, Reach Out and Read San Diego, a program of the American Academy of Pediatrics, CA Chapter 3, received a Proclamation from the City of Chula Vista proclaiming September as School Attendance Awareness Month.

At the end of 2018, Reach Out and Read has a total of 6,200 programs in the U.S and distributed 7 million books to 4.8 million children.
In 2019 Reach Out and Read proudly celebrated 30 years of partnering with families and the pediatric community.
Since 2019, UHS providers have distributed a total of 22,684 books at a cost of nearly $43,000.
The UHS foundation is delighted to fund the program.” The EPIC Corporation, which supports UHS’ electronic medical records system, has provided $22,000 in support since 2020.
