Recology company history timeline

1921

By 1921, the San Francisco scavengers became an organized business, along with other small collectors in the area.

1935

In 1935, the two collection companies formed Sanitary Fill Company (today known as Recology San Francisco), the first of a number of jointly owned subsidiaries.

1956

My grandfather joined the company after he migrated from Italy in 1956 and was one of the original scavengers with Golden Gate Disposal.

1965

In 1965, as part of a modernization program, Scavenger’s Protective Association changed its name to Golden Gate Disposal & Recycling Company.

1978

Mario Puccinelli began his career at Recology in 1978 as a driver in San Francisco’s Northeast Division, which covered areas such as Chinatown, North Beach, and the Marina District.

1983

In 1983, with aim toward expansion, the company – called Golden Gate Disposal – was reorganized as Norcal Solid Waste Systems.

1986

In 1986, Norcal was sold to its 570 employees and their Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) to ensure Norcal’s independence.

1987

In 1987, Norcal purchased Envirocal (formerly Sunset Scavenger). With this merger, Norcal became one of the nation’s 10 largest 100%-employee-owned companies, with a substantial minority representation among its shareholders.

2009

In 2009, Norcal Waste Systems changed its name to Recology Inc. to reflect its commitment to sustainable practices.

2010

Since joining Recology in 2015, Mr.

He joined the Board of Directors at Recology in January 2018.

2021

Sal Coniglio was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Recology on January 1, 2021.
