In 1974, Aimpoint led by Swedish entrepreneurs began exploring methods to improve shooting accuracy and speed.
Next, the more compact Aimpoint® 1000 was launched in 1987 which introduced an external manual adjustment switch to achieve a more competitive price point.
The move to Essen’s former city library (Stadtbibliothek) in 1988 marked the beginning of an extensive realignment that placed design at the heart of corporate success.
In 1990, “Verein Industrieform” became “Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen” (DZNRW). The name change went hand in hand with a new corporate design, created by Otl Aicher, in the form of a black and orange dot accompanied by lettering.
Also, in 1993 he introduced a separate division for communication design.
The next significant product development was the Aimpoint® 2000 – the first red dot sight mountable with rings.
Aimpoint’s development of Advanced Circuit Efficiency Technology (ACET)® changed the electronic sighting market in 2005.
Since 2005, the Red Dot Award celebrates not only product design and communication design: Designers and manufacturers as well as universities can also enter their prototypes and concepts in the Red Dot Award: Design Concept.
Aimpoint’s commitment to serving the military reached a new level in 2007 with the Aimpoint® MPS3 – (the third-generation sight designed for medium caliber weaponry), and Aimpoint® CompM4.
The CompM4™ features an incredible battery life of over 8 years of continuous use from a single AA battery and was chosen as the fourth generation of the United States Army’s M68CCO, which was followed by the Aimpoint® CompM4s in 2008 and remains the top choice today.
Aimpoint introduced an entirely new design in 2010 with the Aimpoint® Hunter Series.
Aimpoint forever changed pistol sights with the introduction of the ACRO Series in 2019.
Since 2019, the competition is known as the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design, offering a larger platform to brands.
