1973
In 1973, the rooms only motel chain opens in Columbus, Ohio, by the late James R. Trueman.
1982
1982 The RediCard , Red Roof s guest identification card, is introduced, and makes reservations through the toll-free number faster and easier for guests.
1984
1984 Computerized property-management systems connect to the corporate office.
He named Richard Bibart, who had joined the company in 1984 as general counsel and vice president of planning, to head the Red Roof Inns Management Co., the new operating arm of the Red Roof Inns.
1986
Trueman, a sportsman who also owned the TrueSports auto racing team, guided Red Roof Inns Inc. for the next 14 years, until his death in 1986, following a two-year battle with cancer.
1988
1988 The first TV and radio advertising campaign launches.
1989
As Bibart told Lodging Hospitality in 1989, It was clear to Jim Trueman that Red Roof could grow rapidly.
1990
Under Morgan Stanley, Red Roof Inns, which had added only The Trueman Club to its list of properties since 1990, acquired more than a motel a month for the next year and a half.
1993
Morgan Stanley had restated that policy and concern about control when it acquired Red Roof Inns in 1993.
1995
Late in 1995, Morgan Stanley took Red Roof Inns public with a 160 million initial public offering, the 10 million shares representing about 35 percent of all stock in the company.
2001
2001 The RediCard program is re-launches as RediCard Preferred Member a points-based loyalty program that rewards guests with a free night for about every 10 paid nights.
2007
Previously the chain was owned by French hotel giant Accor, until the company sold Red Roof in 2007 in order to focus on its Motel 6 operations.
