Reed College company history timeline
Since its founding in 1908 as an independent undergraduate institution, Reed College has remained steadfast to one central commitment: to provide a balanced, comprehensive education in liberal arts and sciences, fulfilling the highest standards of intellectual excellence.
Founded in 1909, it is named after Simeon Reed, a prosperous Portland businessman.
Snyder was educated at Reed College (B.A., 1951) in Portland, Oregon, where he became friends with Philip Whalen, a classmate and future Beat poet.
In 1955 Snyder was among the poets who participated in the historic reading at the Six Gallery at which Ginsberg introduced his poem Howl.
Snyder received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1975.
The collection won the Bollingen Prize in Poetry in 1997.
A longtime advocate of environmental issues, Snyder argued in Back on the Fire: Essays (2007) that forest fires can be beneficial and that government actions to fight them often work against natural processes.
