Regional Center of Orange County company history timeline
In 1985, a California State Supreme Court decision reaffirmed the Lanterman guarantee of services.
In 1992, Senate Bill 1383 updated the philosophy of the Lanterman Act and expanded the range of available services and supports.
With deep roots in Orange County, the History Center opened in 2000 and is operated by Orange County and the nonprofit Historical Society of Central Florida, Inc.
In 2001, only 3,800 people were still residing in state developmental centers, while over 163,000 individuals and families were receiving community-based services.
Congratulations to Frank Billingsley, the 2021 recipient of our Donald A. Cheney Award, which each year honors a Central Floridian who embodies a lifelong dedication to preserving the area’s history.
