ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
Provides nutritional care to hospitalized patients; reviews MD prescription for patients feedings and interviews patients to obtain information regarding food habits for guidance in planning diet; assesses nutritional status based on laboratory values, medical and nutritional history and medical/surgical condition; develops nutritional care plans based on this information in accordance with accepted AND (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics))) standards of practice and written department protocols.
Documents in the electronic health record (EHR) using the nutrition care process, consults with physicians regarding possible changes in diet orders; develops and plans individual diet including necessary supplements and tube feedings; reviews menus for correct patient selections and menu modifications and makes appropriate substitutions.
Maintains record of all patients seen and recommended therapeutic action, makes referrals for follow-up nutritional care when appropriate.
Monitors patients to determine changes in nutritional status; i.e., check weights and lab values; assess nutritional adequacy of patient's intake of food, tube or parenteral feedings as necessary.
Recommends supplements and/or tube feedings; monitors tube feedings for tolerance and assists physician in determining increases in rate and strength as appropriate.
Performs nutritional support assessments (including intravenous feeding) as assigned.
All clinical data is documented in the EHR based on departmental policies.
Instructs patients and their families, singularly and in groups, regarding diet therapy after hospitalization; i.e., the principle of nutrition, the purpose and use of diet, food selection and preparation, and adopting food plans to individual needs.
Participates in weekly medical and social service rounds to receive information on condition, treatment, and discharge planning of patients on wards; discusses dietary requirements and treatment and diet plans and case studies.
Participates in daily rounds with the medical/surgical teams as necessary.
Meets daily with the nutrition support dietitian to discuss continuity of care for critically ill patients with stabilized conditions who become the responsibility of the staff dietitian.
Researches, tests, develops and documents patient-focused recipes.
Participates in food evaluation and product testing; evaluates commercially prepared supplements and beverages and recommends usage based on nutritional content and patient response, evaluates food served for quality and compliance with dietary prescriptions.
Provides in-service education in nutrition to hospital personnel (i.e. nurse, medical students and residents); compiles and develops educational materials for use in individual and group classes.
Acts as preceptor in the education/training of dietetic interns and medical staff.
Provides nutritional care when consulted for several malnourished and/or critically ill patients; diagnosis' malnutrition and documents in the HER using BMC approved malnutrition diagnostic criteria; utilizes the nutrition-focused physical exam to assess nutritional status; evaluates patient's nutritional needs and develops nutritional care plan; determines solutions for total parenteral nutrition and tube feedings when appropriate and submit to MD for approval as well as chart in the medical records.
Monitors patients daily to assess nutritional status; i.e., reviews daily intake, laboratory values, anthropometrics and the nutrition-focused physical exam, prepares diet plans for the patient's transition from TPN to supplement and regular food.
Speaks on nutritional care for the critically ill to interested hospital groups as needed.
May cover in other specialty areas trained for, when needed.
Performs all functions of an Assistant Dietitian.
Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals.
Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
OTHER DUTIES:

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree required in Nutrition or related discipline (e.g. Public Health Nutrition, Dietetics/Nutrition Education, Exercise Physiology, Food and Nutrition, Food Safety, Food Science, Food Service System Management, Hospitality Management, Medical Nutrition Therapy/Human Nutrition, Nutrition Biochemistry/Metabolism, Nutrition Science, Sports Nutrition). Masters' degree preferred but not required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Must be registered by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or the ability to be registered prior to starting.
Additional certifications such as Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and Licensed (LDN) by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure may be required by the department.
EXPERIENCE:
Must have completed AND-approved internship or comparable alternate.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
General clinical understanding of metabolism in relation to clinical nutrition; knowledge of food chemistry and macro/micro nutrient composition of foods.
Work requires the interpersonal skills sufficient to explain procedures to patient, and alleviate apprehensions, as well as effectively interact with physicians, fellows, nursing, etc.
High level of analytical skills to interpret laboratory data, identify and plan individual weight loss programs and assess diet plans and their physiologic effect.
Ability to work in a fast paced changing environment
Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information.
Competent to provide nutrition support to assigned population group.
Works M-F and some weekends and holidays
Compensation Range:
$33.36- $42.52

Basic Function and Responsibility:
We are seeking part-time coverage for our Administrative Dietitian during their maternity leave. This dietitian will counsel and collaborate with students requiring dining accommodations due to medical nutrition needs. Dietitian will follow the "Protocol for Students with Medically Restricted Diets" and work in collaboration with multiple departments to fulfill dining accommodations needs. Multidisciplinary involvement is notable for but not limited to; Office of Disability Services, Dining Management, Residential Life, Athletics, Counseling Services and University Health Services. The dietitian along with the BC Dining management team works to ensure that the University meets student's medical nutrition needs and is ADA compliant. Assist incoming first year students, transfer students, and/or newly diagnosed students (primarily through virtual appointments) over the summer to prepare for the academic year.
Dietitian provides training to BC Dining culinary staff on food allergens, celiac disease and other medical nutrition needs.
Represents dining services at the First Year Experience (FYE) parent information sessions. Collaborates with the Executive Chef and Associate Director of Restaurant Operations on the implementation of the predetermine FYE Menu.
Works alongside the Associate Director of Food & Beverage, Associate Director of Restaurant Operations, Executive Chef, General Managers & Production Managers in the development of the 2026-2027 academic year menu cycle. Dietitian ensures diverse nutritional needs are met during the menu development process (e.x. plant based, gluten free, Halal, Kosher, etc.) Evaluate recipes for nutritional content and accuracy, provide feedback to the teams for adjustments needed to meet nutritional needs and recipe integrity.
Assist in preparation for events, resources and nutrition related activities for the upcoming academic year.
Provides one on one services for evidence based nutrition counseling for students on BC Dining's meal plan. Communicate largely with the students, may need to communicate with parents while following HIPAA guidelines.

Qualifications
Required:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Dietetics or Nutrition with membership in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. RD and LDN licensure (licensure in the state of Massachusetts) and certification
At least 1 year experience in counseling clients/patients with medically restricted diets and working to meet their needs in an institutional setting.
Experience counseling clients with a variety of medical diagnoses, including but not limited to eating disorders, food allergies, gastrointestinal disorders, weight management concerns, as well as general wellness nutrition.
Preferred experience with implementation of nutrition and wellness programs and campaigns, including nutrition education and communication of messaging via social media, website, and in person.
Ability to effectively coordinate communication with students, parents, campus partners, and BC Dining leadership team.

Rehabilitation Services Unit (RSU) and Medical Complex Unit - Perform initial nutrition assessment, complete follow up assessments, provide nutrition education for transition of care, follow established guidelines, maintain communication with health care proxies, attend daily interdisciplinary meetings, weekly care plan meetings, communicate with nutrition assistants and patient care associates to ensure nutrition needs, therapeutic diets, meal preference and customer service needs are met.
Timely completion of section K within the Minimum Data Sheet of the electronic medical record for RSU patients.
Long Term Care Chronic Hospital - Perform initial nutrition assessment, complete annual, monthly and quarterly follow up assessments, provide nutrition education, attend interdisciplinary care plan meetings, follow established guidelines, maintain communication with health care proxies, kitchen supervisors, country kitchen associates and patient care associates to ensure nutrition needs, therapeutic diets, meal preference and customer service needs are met.
Utilize validated tools and current Malnutrition Guidelines to assess patients for malnutrition including NFPE, hand grip, and reference to the standards of practice.
Prioritize High risk patients as indicated in guidelines and acuity ranking.
Calculate calorie counts and document in the medical record as ordered.
Maintain monthly weight records for assigned floors on LTC and address concerns for those that are having significant weight loss with appropriate team members.
Monitor weekly weight records on RSU and address concerns for those that have significant weight changes with appropriate team members. Attend rounds or weekly Wounds, Weights and Falls meeting for further communication in this regard.
Determine short and long term goals and objectives with focus on Patient-Centered Care and Age-Friendly Health Systems of the 4M's (What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility).
Serve as a mentor/ resource to employees in culinary, nutrition, and medical teams. Initiate education as necessary in a format best suited to the learner.
Conduct tray assessments and meal rounds to assess intake adequacy, tray accuracy, diet adherence, food quality and patient satisfaction.

The Outpatient Dietitian assesses, develops, and coordinates medical nutrition therapy and education activities for patients with complex nutritional needs in the treatment of chronic disease including but not limited to weight management, diabetes, heart disease, allergies, GI disorders, and malnutrition. The dietitian plans and provides nutritional care to patients per department policies and procedures by evaluating patient status and need, and adapting dietary interventions to individual patient needs taking into account nutritional status, environmental or social barriers, and cultural diversity utilizing appropriate and proven counseling modalities. The dietitian evaluates and assesses patient compliance, and physiological response to diet therapy though direct interview, lab values, monitoring tolerance of foods or tube feedings and actively coordinates with other providers in development and implementation of patient care plans. The Outpatient Dietitian plays a key role in the creation and management of complex dietary regimens and protocols within the department and plays an active role in developing nutrition based programming, and in the mentorship and education of peers, staff, and students demonstrating consistent high level of competency.

Clinical Knowledge & Skills
Strong knowledge of food and nutrition, with ability to perform nutrition assessment, formulate nutrition plans, and provide nutrition counseling and education to adult patients on a referral basis and follow-up counseling to patients requiring long term nutritional intervention. Assesses nutritional status based on laboratory values, medical and nutritional history and medical/surgical condition; develops nutritional care plans based on this information in accordance with accepted (AND) standards of practice and written department protocols.
Provides nutrition education and engages patients in behavior modification skills in individual and group settings as needed.
Maintains records and provides periodic reports to referring and other care providers as needed
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide MNT appropriate for multitude of chronic diseases, demonstrating familiarity and be willing to actively work towards developing competency over variety of dietary interventions
Attend all clinical meetings, rounds, or committees to present nutrition care plans as needed
Develops and plans individual diet including necessary medical food supplements and/or tube feedings; monitors tube feedings for tolerance and assists MD in determining increases in rate, changes in tube feeding products and strength as appropriate.
Assist in patient and clinician outreach through lectures, community events, and other marketing opportunities as needed. Assists in patient orientations and support groups as requested.
Leadership:
Provides in-service education in nutrition to hospital personnel such as MD's, residents, students, nurses, dietary personnel as requested.
Acts as a preceptor in the education/training of dietetic interns and medical students from universities and hospitals; assigns work to students as appropriate, supervises the student's practical experience such as individual counseling and group teaching by students; develops Learning Activities.
Assists with interviewing new prospective dietitians and participating in the training/onboarding processes for new employees as needed
Program Development/Research:
Compiles and develops educational materials for use in individual and group classes.
Participates with Operations management and Nutrition Manager in proposing and developing policies and procedures, CQI monitors, guidelines and standards of care, records and calculates results on clinical projects as needed. Takes proactive role in monitoring patient retention, and coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity.
Participate in department clinical research as it relates to nutrition care by providing necessary nutrition education and monitoring, as requested
Actively develops strategies resulting in growth of the clinic. Works closely with Nutrition Manager and Operations Managers to develop and implement nutrition programs
