Reinsurance Group of America history

Incorporated in 1992 in the state of Missouri, Reinsurance Group of America, Incorporated (RGA) was formed as a holding company for GA’s United States and Canadian reinsurance businesses.

RGA was taken public by IPO in 1993 on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: RGA), with General American retaining a 65% share.

In 1994, RGA opened the company’s first office in Spain.

In 1995, RGA launched the business unit that will evolve into RGA Global Financial Solutions.

In 1996, RGA opened its first office in Australia.

In 1997, RGA opened its first office in Malaysia.

In 1998, the company opened offices in Mexico, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

In 1999, MetLife acquired a majority stake in RGA from General American.

MetLife acquired General American in 2000, including its interest in RGA, and after 8 years of ownership, MetLife spun RGA off to become a fully independent company.

In 2001, RGA Technology Partners was formed to develop life insurance technology solutions, including the AURA automated underwriting platform.

RGA opens a licensed branch office in Mumbai, India, where the company had been operating as a foreign reinsurer since 2002.

RGA opened a representative office in Beijing in 2005.

In 2006, RGA opened an office in Poland and expanded in the Central and Eastern Europe markets.

In 2008, RGA spun off from MetLife to become a fully independent company.

In 2011, RGA opened an office in the United Arab Emirates.

In 2016, RGA opened an office in Brazil.

Anna Manning is appointed CEO, effective January 1, 2017, succeeding founding CEO Greig Woodring.

For the 9th consecutive year in 2019, RGA ranks #1 on NMG Consulting’s Global All Respondent Business Capability Index (BCI), and is recognized as “Life Reinsurer of the Year” at the 2019 Reactions North America Awards.
