We're looking for a Relay Technician to performs electrical testing on relays in electrical power stations. As a relay technician, your duties involve using equipment such as a Doble 6150 to test different types of microprocessor relays inside the electrical substation.
Salary Range: $30 -$50 per hour

Office Location: Centennial, CO

Travel: 50% or higher

+ Perform installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of protective relaying equipment.

+ Perform function testing of substation control circuits on relay panel, transformers & circuit breakers.

+ Develop relay macros and testing routines with confirmation of proper protection and control design.

+ Perform end-to-end relay testing using relay test software, and analyze the operation of the relay based on the fault type run.

+ Develop written standard commissioning, testing and maintenance procedures for protective relaying.

+ Examine relay settings and logic equations for confirmation of system operation in accordance with design.

+ Develop isolation restoration procedures for a construction outage.

+ Lead safety briefings on job site.

+ 3+ years of hands on experience installing, maintaining, testing & repairing protective relays in transmission, generation or distribution level substations.

+ Ability to develop written test procedures for transmission, generation and distribution substation protection.

+ Ability to develop relay test plans necessary to test the relays per EPS and customer specifications.

+ Lead investigations of electrical related issues, including root cause analysis as needed.

+ Ability to calibrate & perform functional tests on both electromechanical and micro-processor based protective relays for substations.

+ Capable of trouble shooting distribution and transmission controls circuits

+ Knowledge of relay test software is required. Doble ProTest or Protection Suite preferred.

+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

+ Experience installing, maintaining, testing, or repairing circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, or similar equipment is desired.

+ Ability to operate test equipment needed for the project.

+ Ability to function as an on-site lead for the project, assign tasks, prioritize activities and interface with customers.

+ Ability to read and fully understand protection and control schematic diagrams and wiring diagrams, and catch mistakes and problems with the drawings and design when comparing with accepted engineering and customer standards.

+ Ability to determine and interpret customer's requirements and provide final deliverables including as built prints and all test results meeting specified requirements

+ Ability to understand manufactures' literature to facilitate testing.

+ Ability to review relay settings and determine the relay logic matches the design on the schematics as well as customer standards. This would include that the CT Ratios are correct as well as the trip outputs.

+ Able to work overtime and travel out of town for periods of time.

+ Able to climb ladders, stand for extended periods, able to lift 70 lbs.

+ Must have a valid driver's license and currently have and be able to maintain a good driving record.

+ Experience installing, maintaining, testing, or repairing circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, or similar equipment is desired.

The **Relay Technician - Union (IBEW)** is a technician responsible for the maintenance, testing and repair of protection systems in Transmission, Distribution and electrical power substations. This position involves installing, maintaining and troubleshooting control circuits to circuit breakers, Potential Transformers (PTs), Capacitor Coupled Voltage Transformers (CCVTs), and other equipment. Also replacing wires, testing different components and calibrating generators. Responsible for ensuring electricity gets routed through the substation on its way to residential or commercial areas at the correct voltage.

**Key Responsibilities**

+ Responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and correcting problems to all protective relays, substations, control circuits, supervisory controls, and battery systems in distribution, transmission and generation facilities.

+ Constructs, installs and maintains auto-transfer schemes in distribution system.

+ Performs the installation, wiring and checkout of all protective relaying and associated control systems in transmission, distribution and generation stations.

+ Performs periodic testing and functional operation of protection systems in accordance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) mandate.

+ Maintains relay carrier equipment such as wavetraps and line tuners.

+ Diagnoses and corrects problems in equipment such as power circuit breakers, transformers, and fault/disturbance recorders in a manner that is not disruptive to the regional power grid.

+ Installs and maintains battery systems and chargers in transmission substations.

+ Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots both Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)-based and solid state transfer switches and sectionalizing switch automatic controls as well as the associated motor operators. Also required to train field personnel in the proper operation and testing of these devices.

+ Maintains SAP Equipment Maintenance database used for keeping accurate and concise historical records of transmission equipment.

+ Develop relay testing programs, Distribution Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (DSCADA) programs, carrier system programs, transmission and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) programs, and PLCs which controls Capacitor Banks, Load Tap Changers (LTCs), and Breaker reclosing.

+ Performs testing on SCADA Systems, carrier systems, CCVTs, Transformers, Current Transformers (CTs), PTs, wave traps, Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) schemes, power plant SCADA and generation relaying, battery sets, capacitor banks and controls, PLCs, and regulators.

+ Serves as a member of scheduled call-out to ensure timely restoration of service.

+ Connects test apparatus to troubled circuit.

+ Analyzes test results and interprets electrical diagrams to locate defective relay.

+ Opens and closes switches to isolate defective relay and makes adjustments or removes relay for repair.

+ Tests circuit and equipment to evaluate such factors as insulation quality, which affect function of relays.

+ Analyzes test data to determine performance characteristics of relays and effect of system modifications on relay performance.

+ Supervise contractors in construction of substations and assist engineering with design.

+ Provide communication to supervisor to provide status updates on work, and identify risks in delivery or resourcing needs.

General Purpose

A Station Meter and Relay Technician is a Journeyman qualified to install, maintain, adjust, test and repair all substation and generating station meters, relays and control equipment.Must have a working knowledge of all relay and control schemes sufficient to enable him to diagnose and correct troubles on station meters, relays, controls, and remote control equipment.

May work alone or direct the work of an Assistant Station Meter and Relay Technician. When assigned, this position shall work under the direction of a Lead Station Meter and Relay Technician or a Senior Station Meter and Relay Technician.

Responsibilities

• Installing, commissioning, testing, adjusting, repairing and replacing protection and control equipment used in high voltage generation plants, transmission and distribution substations. This equipment includes but is not limited to electro-mechanical, solid state and microprocessor protection relays, Watt and VAR meters, recording instruments including Sequence of Event Recorders and Digital Fault Recorders, and control equipment for all substation equipment including circuit breakers, motor operated switches, transformers, load tap changers, voltage regulators, capacitor banks and reactors.
• Using computers extensively to communicate with substation equipment and to operate test gear.
• Accurately completing maintenance and commissioning forms and submitting them with all test records to the appropriate company departments.
• Routinely operate substation equipment and perform substation switching and grounding as necessary.
• Must be able to lift and move heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds.
• Demonstrate responsibility for tools, computer, test equipment, and vehicles assigned to them.
• Working conditions of this position include the following:
  • Technicians may work alone or in crews, which may include workers from another trade.
  • Technicians may work under the direction of others or be required to direct the work of others, depending on the work being performed.
  • Work may include adverse weather conditions and/or long hours during emergency conditions or to minimize impact to customers.

Requirements

• A High School Diploma, GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Successful completion of a required written examination reflective of AC and DC electrical theory. (Material covered in chapters 1-5, 7, 12-14 in Schaum's Outlines of Basic Electricity 2nd edition).
• A valid driver's license with a good driving record and the ability to acquire a Medical Examiner's Certificate.
• Ability to understand and comply with company policies and procedures.
• Ability to follow safety rules and use PPE's appropriate for work being performed.
• Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Preferences

Experience in electrical construction or maintenance in commercial or industrial settings.

Experience in installation and troubleshooting of motor controls and process instrumentation.

Working knowledge of AC and DC electrical theory.

Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair electrical installations safely and effectively.

Knowledge of and the ability to safely use hand tools such as screwdrivers, plyers, wrenches, sockets and tape measures.

Knowledge of and the ability to safely use power tools such as drills, grinders, saws, heat guns, and soldering irons.

Knowledge of and the ability to safely use electrical test equipment such as volt meters, amp meters, ohm meters, Meggers and power quality analyzers.

Ability to read, understand and use electrical schematics.

Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.

Basic knowledge of computers and ability to use programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer.

PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.

A state-issued Journeyman Electrician's license.

A college or trade school degree or certificate in the electrical field with applicable hands-on experience.

Military experience in the electrical field with applicable hands-on experience.
