1897

The family-led company, founded in 1897, was the last locally based supermarket chain other than Kroger.

In 1897, a young man named William Remke had the foresight and determination to start his own business.

1932

William passed away in December of 1932, not living to see his three sons expand the Remke business.

1935

In 1935, William Remke’s son, Robert, along with his brothers, William H. and Louis, opened a store in Ft.

1957

In 1957, having outgrown its facilities, the Ft.

1990

In 1990, the warehouse and corporate office were moved from the Ft.

2000

Bigg's struggled in the region after 2000 as competition intensified from not only Kroger, but other nontraditional rivals.

2002

In 2002, the warehouse and corporate office were moved to a 83,000 square foot building in Erlanger.

In 2002, Matthew Remke joined the organization and has worked in many different capacities.

2010

The shuttered Columbia Township, Newport and Westwood stores were originally part of the ailing bigg's chain that Remke Markets acquired in 2010 from Supervalu.

Financial terms of the 2010 deal with Supervalu, which was Remke's wholesale supplier, also were not released.

2015

The Erlanger-based chain has closed three stores since 2015.
