1864

The Washoe County Hospital opened in 1864, after Nevada became a state.

1949

1949: First pediatrics unit in the region opens.

1963

1963: First pacemaker implant in the region.

1964

1964: Washoe Medical Center expands to 300 beds.

1977

1977: First open-heart surgery and first cardiac catheterization in the region.

1979

1979: University of Nevada, Reno establishes first residency program at Washoe Medical Center.

1984

The medical center and the healthcare organization were transferred to Washoe Health Systems, a private non-profit organization, in 1984.

1989

1989: Opening of region’s first dialysis center at Washoe Medical Center.

1999

1999: First intravascular brachytherapy procedure in northern Nevada.

2002

2002: Washoe Institute for Neurosciences and Washoe Comprehensive Stroke Center, the only facilities of their kind in the region, open at Washoe Medical Center.

2003

2003: Washoe Medical Center expands its services by acquiring a rehabilitation hospital.

2004

2004: First and only PET/CT for diagnosing and treating cancer patients and bi-plane angiography services in the region introduced.

2006

In 2006, Washoe Health System changed its name to Renown Health.

2007

2007: Construction on the Tahoe Tower, a 10-story patient tower, is completed.

2008

Renown Health became the first hospital in northern Nevada to perform robotic surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System in 2008.

2009

The area's first and only children's emergency room was opened in 2009 at Renown Regional Medical Center and is the region's only Children's Miracle Network Hospital.

2012

The Renown Regional Medical Center opened a new pediatric intensive care unit and pediatric floor in February 2012.

2016

Renown Health partnered with 23andMe and the Desert Research Institute to launch the Healthy Nevada Project, a population health study, in 2016.

2018

The Healthy Nevada Project provided northern Nevadans with no-cost genetic testing and participants who opted-in to receive clinical results were then screened for Tier 1 CDC genetic conditions in 2018.

2020

In 2020, Renown Health established Western Clinical Alliance, a clinically integrated network focused on improving patient outcomes and lowering the overall cost of care.
