2009

A November 2009 article in The New York Times helped bring publicity to the company shortly after its launch.

2016

By 2016, RTR had more than six million customers, 400 designers offered on their site, and nearly 1000 employees.

In 2016, the company began offering everyday clothing through a subscription model.

2017

In 2017, Fleiss left the company to co-found Jetblack, a concierge shopping service.

2019

Fleiss remained on the board and Hyman remained as CEO. In March 2019, Rent the Runway received a new round of financing that increased its valuation to the unicorn level of $1 billion.

Le Tote acquired the venerable department store Lord & Taylor in 2019 in an effort to revive one of the US’s oldest stores.

The company posted a net loss of $171 million last year, compared with a net loss of $154 million in 2019.

2020

In August 2020, the company announced that it would be converting its New York City store into a drop-off center.

Hyman was optimistic about Rent the Runway, particularly given its performance in the past year and a half. “2020 really should have been the end of Rent the Runway, and we’ve emerged a stronger business financially,” she said.
