North American expansion in 2008 saw Repsol open a massive regasification plant on the east coast of Canada with enough capacity to supply up to 20% of the gas demand for New York and New England.
In 2008 Repsol began an intensive exploration campaign in which it focused its efforts on and invested in exploring in new areas, with results that enabled the company to change its profile.
In 2010, Repsol signed an agreement with Sinopect to undertake exploration and production operations in Brazil which made us one of the largest energy companies in Latin America.
The company was renamed Repsol YPF SA. In Argentina’s highly regulated petroleum market, the new company found limited profit in expanding production, though it discovered a major shale oil field in Neuquén province in 2011.
In April 2012 the Argentine government, impatient with lack of growth in the country’s energy sector, replaced YPF’s managers and introduced legislation to nationalize almost all of Repsol’s majority stake.
