Essential Functions
Zoological Research Internships -
The Little Rock Zoo Research Intern will participate in on-grounds, behavioral and wellness research projects. Duties will include conducting literature reviews, creating behavioral ethograms, collecting behavior observations of animals, creating visualizations of data, running statistical analyses, and presenting results. Training will be provided. Interns will also be expected to be able to speak to the public about their work in a professional manner and at an appropriate level. Previous experience in research or animal behavior is helpful but not required. Suitable candidates should be comfortable interacting with people and standing (or sitting) outdoors in the Arkansas heat for extended periods of time. Interns will also have the opportunity to learn about zoo management and animal welfare topics through lectures and activities offered throughout the summer.
Please note, this is not an animal care internship - while we will consider all applicants, those with an interest in research may find this internship more suitable than those focused on animal care.

Summary of Job Duties:
The Research Associate will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and have access to cutting-edge facilities for conducting both clinical and basic science research. The focus will be on using a range of animal models and cell lines to study how chromatin and DNA epigenetic alterations drive gene dysfunction and leukemogenesis. Strong expertise in molecular and cell biology research, including experimental design, execution, data analysis, and interpretation.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, genomics, biochemistry, or related field plus five (5) years of research experience required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
* Strong expertise in molecular and cell biology research, including experimental design, execution, data analysis, and interpretation.
* Proven ability to publish scientific research as a first or lead author and contribute to grant writing.
* Experience in conducting animal experiments.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Research experience in cancer epigenetics or bioinformatics preferred
Additional Information:
Responsibilities:
* Coordinates receipts of multiple required sample types at various external sites.
* Ensures proper shipping requirements are followed so all samples arrive at our UAMS laboratory in acceptable condition for analysis.
* Serves as primary liaison with the various external sites, ensuring they all have the necessary supplies for collection and shipment, representing the UAMS team sponsoring the clinical trial.
* Responsible for answering questions and resolving any issues that arise at the external sites.
* Performs all assigned laboratory benchwork.
* Keeps track of subject appointments.
* Understands and performs laboratory procedures related to clinical trials such as processing of blood, oral wash, and fecal samples, performing experiments, and analyzing and interpreting data.
* Executes research goals of funded grants including data entry (both electronic and hardcopy) and data analysis.
* Maintains and sustains standards of the laboratory and equipment, including assigned duties and ordering laboratory supplies in a timely manner.
* Teaches and oversees activities of students rotating in the lab.
* Performs laboratory-based research in this area including the design, implementation, analysis, and interpretation of laboratory experiments.
* Helps publish data in top scientific journals and assist the supervisor in grant preparation.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
