Sandia's Design Engineering Group consists of multiple mechanical design departments that provide design engineering services using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software such as PTC Creo and other 3D modeling tools. We partner with engineering teams across the lab to produce innovative design solutions based on high quality CAD models and drawings. We ensure fit, form, and function using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), while ensuring manufacturability and maintainability of designs.
We determine the physical characteristics of the product including geometric form, interface features, manufacturing specifications, processes, and assembly instructions. SENIOR R&D PROCESS ENGINEER
Based out of Rocket Lab's site in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Senior R&D Process Engineer will work in an R&D environment to develop new processes and improve existing capabilities for the manufacture of cutting-edge III-V solar cell products. You will support the Process Engineering Manager, with deliverables required for internal leadership, board of directors, and investors.
WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:
Lead/contribute to semiconductor fabrication process development projects to advance new products from concept phase through manufacturing phase
Develop a detailed understanding of the design, construction, manufacturing methods, and operating principles of series interconnected multi-junction solar cells and their operation in the space environment
Develop an understanding of the relationship between fabrication process and device performance, cost, reliability, and manufacturability
Some examples include Mask design, photolithography, Wet etch, Metal deposition, Wafer thinning
Write process recipes, work instructions with process and engineering controls, and develop an understanding of fabrication tool functionality. Help troubleshoot tool issues and process-related device issues including hands-on work in a clean-room

Job/Position Summary
The Manufacturing Engineer (Shaping) reports directly to the MFG Engineering Manager and supports the ceramic piezo and RF business. This position will oversee the manufacturing processes involved in machining ceramic materials.
Major Areas of Responsibility
* Leads and directs the monitoring and troubleshooting of manufacturing processes to maintain/increase product yields and quality through the utilization of an array of continuous improvement tools (DOE, DMAIC, Six Sigma, Green Belt) and general statistical analysis methods.
* Recommends and implements lean processes and products that improve manufacturing capabilities efficiencies, yields and quality with emphasis on ceramic machining processes.
* Machining process optimization: Develop and optimize machining processes for ceramic materials to improve efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. Including selection of appropriate equipment, machining parameters, and cutting tools.
* Provide diagnostic, recommendations for maintaining, upgrade existing equipment or acquisition of new equipment.
* Quality Assurance: Implement quality control measures to ensure that machined ceramics meet specifications and standards. Develop/maintain inspection protocols and collaborate with quality control teams to perform regular inspection and audits.
* Work closely with new product introduction team to efficiently and cost effectively introduce new products into manufacturing.
* Provides technical leadership to technicians, engineers, and operators.
* Reports and interfaces process and project status and progress to management in oral and written communications. Also, interfaces with suppliers, and customers.
* Uses technical knowledge and ingenuity to resolve complex problems and provides technical leadership for their area of responsibility.
* Works independently and periodically reports status to engineering management and plant manufacturing management.
