We have a current opportunity for a Staff Project Engineer to join our team in Goleta, CA. This role is responsible for project technical execution using a holistic approach to design, develop, evaluate, and modify products through their entire life cycle. Serves as Lead to the business unit in long-range planning concerning new or projected areas of technological research and advancements.
Responsibilities
Lead project to ensure the scope, schedule, staffing and budget are well defined and maintained.
Functions as technical lead of a program or project team.
Technical customer liaison and support for business development activities.
Responsible for the technical integrity of projects while providing technical guidance to clients, and departments at the brand, program, and project levels.
Act as a point of technical escalation and resolution during a project's lifecycle.
Non-conformance disposition authority.
Leads in design reviews, test plans and procedures to ensure applicability to the current system and traceability of requirements through compliance verification and validation.
Generates system level requirements verification procedures and customer acceptance test procedures.
Reduces high level product development strategies into system requirement specifications and works with other engineering disciplines to develop lower-level detailed requirements.
Establishes and coordinates development of standards, practices, and procedures as related to the overall product development.
Assesses performance using evaluation criteria and technical performance measures.
Responsible for a projects technical/operational leadership within the programmatic guidelines set by the program manager and the customer.
Controls project costs through close control of system intent, aligning resources to project phases, and approving expenditures.
Defines, generates, reviews, presents project's required documentation.
Some travel required - an average of 10-15% travel may be required. Most of the travel is local but some overnight travel may be necessary.
Ideal Experience
B.S. in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
Minimum of 8+ years' experience, including developing, designing, manufacturing, and testing production hardware.
Must have well-rounded System Level approach, with previous experience leading technical teams.
Experience with space mechanism design and aerospace guidelines.
Proficient in CAD and PDM Systems.
Drafting knowledge with understanding of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 along with tolerance analysis capabilities.
Prior experience preparing and presenting project / program updates to all levels and customers.
Experience in the Root Cause Analysis process.
Desired Skills
M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other space-related discipline.
Experience with PDM Pro, SolidWorks, SolidWorks Simulation, Thermal Desktop, NASTRAN or ANSYS is a plus.

In this vital role you will join our Biosafety Development (BSD) group.
The Senior Associate will support ensuring patient safety by performing sterile filtration validation studies for Amgen's pharmaceutical products. Also, they may partake in technology development for detection and identification of bacterial adventitious agents.
Primary focus will be on performing GMP validation studies for sterile filtration via Standard Operating Procedures and qualified detection methods using model bacterial strains. These studies will support IND and MA filings to the FDA. Test articles are generated with protein purification processes and will require preliminary testing to assess matrix interference with bacterial health. Assays performed for the detection of bacteria may include traditional detection methods and/or molecular techniques.
Responsibilities may include the following:
Leading and executing GMP bacterial filtration retention studies to support IND and MA filings to the FDA.
Utilizing traditional or molecular assays for the detection of bacterial adventitious agents.
Applying filtration knowledge and techniques to troubleshoot problems during execution of studies.
Assay method development and qualification.
Training other employees.
Managing materials and supply inventory.

Space Systems - The Components
Space Systems is where Umbra turns hardware and software designs into on-orbit realities; developing, implementing and iterating mission-ready core technology, while simultaneously advancing the next generation of our own satellite constellation. Space Systems is vertically integrated across the satellite architecture, thus the team designs, builds, and tests an array of critical components and subsystems, including power systems, communications, control systems, deployment hardware, avionics, and payloads, as well as the flight software, firmware and digital design solutions to support the entire hardware stack. Our focus is on first principles engineering, and our mandate is simple: it has to work when it counts. Every bolt, board, and binary is proven on our own SAR constellation, ensuring flight-proven reliability where failure is not an option.

About the Job
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated professional to become an integral part of our dynamic and multidisciplinary Space Systems engineering team as a Staff Mechanical Engineer. In this position, you will have the opportunity to contribute significantly to the design and development of innovative, next-generation space systems and mechanisms. The ideal candidate will possess a deep passion for designing, prototyping, building, and testing hardware, as well as demonstrable expertise in the area of rotating machinery.
This position is based on-site in our Santa Barbara, CA office.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Design and analyze spacecraft mechanisms, including:
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to derive and refine requirements.
Create motorization budgets.
Perform detailed design and component selection for encoders and signal routing/cable management.
Design for launch loads and stow/release behavior.
Create pointing budgets accounting for on-orbit behaviors.
Work closely with the Chief Engineer and Systems Architects to optimize designs for performance and manufacturability.
Create detailed design documentation, including drawings, design guides, and Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
Own the design through the full build and test lifecycle, including:
Conduct Qualification campaigns.
Develop test plans and equipment selection for verification of torque and torque margin and open loop and closed loop pointing performance.
Verify as built performance over temperature and in the presence of base disturbance.
Develop and execute work instructions, test plans, and test reports.
Partner with technicians and manufacturing engineers to troubleshoot and resolve hardware issues.
Provide mechanical engineering support to other engineering teams as needed.
Occasionally support launch and test campaigns outside regular hours, including evenings and weekends.
Perform other duties as required.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical. Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
10-15+ years of professional experience in mechanical engineering, specializing in motor-driven mechanisms for spacecraft power or payload systems.
Strong multidisciplinary understanding of mechanisms and mechanical systems.
Hands-on experience in manufacturing and assembling parts using various methods and standards.
Proficiency in CAD software, with experience in design and drafting to ASME Y14.5 standards.
Expertise in first principles analysis, including hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently research, diagnose, and clearly explain technical challenges and solutions.
A strong desire to thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative team environment.

JOB SUMMARY

Skills:
BS in Mechanical Engineering and previous experience in a medical device, or similar industry, with 2 - 6 years current experience with engineering processes and procedures.
Participation in development projects from concept through the 510k and PMA approval process.
Strong background in engineering of electro-mechanical and disposable medical devices.
Ability to model and analyze mechanical systems, fluid flow, stress, assemblies, structures, linkages, heat transfer and other mechanical engineering specialties.
Experience with material & test specs generation, protocol & report writing, process & test development, prototyping, design verification, DOE/SPC process optimization & validation (IQ, OQ, PQ), FMEA.
Product design/development (design control) from concept to post product launch for Europe (EMEA/CE Mark) & US (FDA/PMA/510k) submissions.
Experience in drug/device combination product design and development.

Support project teams in the development of drug delivery devices. Scope includes a wide range of devices, such as; needle protection systems, fluid transfer devices, pen injectors, automatic pen injectors, and micro-infuser delivery pump systems. The qualified candidate will support technical teams to ensure successful device development of these mechanical and electro-mechanical medical devices. The Engineer will work closely with team members to develop detailed engineering specifications, device design & development, support verification, validation, and regulatory submissions of these devices. The role of the Engineer is to work within a cross-functional organization to utilize technologies and methodologies that support short-cycle robust device development.
Responsibilities:
Work cross-functionally with individuals and within project teams.
Create and assess product requirements to determine technical coverage and proper integration different subsystems.
Perform design analyses and assessments.
Execute design characterization and design verification testing.
Develop, execute, and review design documents, specifications, development plans, characterization plan, verification plans, reports, and other related product development documents for assigned projects.
Provide technical assistance to projects.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Strong problem solving, risk assessment, and risk management skills.
Must be capable of working on multiple projects in a deadline driven environment.
Plastic part design experience is a plus.
