Job Description/Duties:
Read and interpret design drawings, blueprints, and procedures.
Perform calculations to determine accurate setups and layouts for machining tasks.
Selects tooling, machine feeds and speeds, lubricants and fixtures.
Perform machining operations safely, adjusting as needed to maintain tight tolerances, ensure quality, and productivity standards.
Inspect workpieces to verify conformance with specifications using measuring instruments.
Perform over-inspections of work completed by other machinists per company procedures.
Monitor equipment performance and conduct or assist with routine maintenance and repairs.
Work with engineering staff to revise or improve procedures, drawings, and determine optimal equipment/tooling setups.
Maintain detailed and accurate records, logs, and documentation related to all work.
Utilize a range of manual and automated machinery, precision measuring tools, and hand tools efficiently and safely.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisors or management.
Required Job Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED.
Must also meet one (1) of the following training/experience requirements:
Must have successfully completed a Machining Diploma or an equivalent program from a recognized trade school or community college (minimum 2-year accredited program) by July 1, 2026.
Must have successfully graduated from the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) Machining program and a preference for 2 years of Machining experience.
A State Certified Machinist Journeyman's Card is required. Applicant must provide a copy of the machinist journeyman's card.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in manufacturing machining or tool making (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Military Service equivalent in pay grade E-6 or above. One or more of the following Navy Enlisted Classifications (NEC) or other service branch specific equivalent:
Machinery Repairman or service equivalent
U32A Computer Numerically Controlled Machinist
U33A NAMTS Inside Machinist
Successful candidates must meet the required WorkKeys assessment standards.
Must be highly motivated, with a focus on attention to detail.

The starting rate for the position in Virginia is $33.76 per hour. Once all requirements are met, the rate is $41.24 per hour.

Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C) facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. As a Journeyman tool Maker, you will be responsible for operating milling machines and several other tools for maintaining dies and other tools in the manufacturing of PVC materials. You will adhere to all EHS standards and requirements. This position reports to the Tool Shop Supervisor Your responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:
Operate manual milling machine, lathe, surface grinder, belt sander, & other bench working tools
Operate wire EDM, Ram EDM, CNC milling machine, Master Cam Cad software.
Maintain extrusion dies and calibrators

Identify new ways to increase equipment utilization through continuous improvements and implementation of new technologies

Complete all training classes and required hours of the Apprenticeship Program
