The Associate R&D Data Scientist contributes to the planning, development, and execution of data science analyses for research and development projects within the ETS Research Institute. The winter wheat breeding program uses field, greenhouse, and laboratory resources to synchronously advance segregating populations, phenotypically and/or genetically select lines for further testing, and field test selected lines in diverse Montana environments for adaptation, pest resistance, agronomic suitability, productivity, and end-use quality. Yield trials are planted in Bozeman and at the seven MAES research centers across Montana each fall. The successful candidate will work together with breeding team currently consisting of a breeder, one Post Doctoral Research Associate and several undergraduate students. Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Master's degree in agronomy or Bachelor's degree + 2 years of professional experience. Experience conducting field research in agronomic crops, including plot maintenance and harvesting. Knowledge of operating and maintaining field research equipment used for trial establishment and data collection. Skilled in collecting and recording research data and managing datasets for statistical analysis. Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Proven experience with small grain and alternative crop production systems in semi-arid regions like the Northern Great Plains. Understanding experimental design and data interpretation tools such as SAS, R, or other statistical software packages. Experience operating and maintaining field and laboratory research equipment. Experience in public engagement and presenting research data at field day demonstrations or farmer meetings. Interest in supporting greenhouse research that complements field studies related to local agricultural needs. The Successful Candidate Will Have excellent organizational skills. Must possess a valid driver's license, an acceptable driving record, and comply with all state of Montana requirements for operating State/University vehicles. A successful candidate with an out-of-state license must obtain a Montana license within 60 days of their hire date. Must possess or be able to obtain a Montana Department of Agriculture Government Pesticide Applicators License with demonstration and research, agricultural plant pest control, and seed treatment classifications within six months of hire. Duties And Responsibilities Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Assistance in the planning, design and implementation of field research projects, including the application of treatments to research plots; Field data recording and collection of research samples using scientifically prescribed methods; Data compilation, entry and analysis, summarization and interpretation of research results; Maintaining and operating field equipment for planting and harvesting crops, field and grounds maintenance; Managing irrigation, soil nutrients, and pests which includes monitoring their levels in fields, maintaining supplies of nutrients and pesticides, mixing and application of these materials, and keeping records of their application; Supervision and training field crews to ensure tasks are completed in a safe, effective, and timely manner; Maintaining historic and research orchards including pruning and training. Secondary duties assigned to this position include: Managing the grounds including lawn, trees, shrubs, and fences; Assisting in facility maintenance and repair.
