The Radon Group consists of ~20 people with a mixture of skills: scientific, technical, logistical and business. Our role is to increase awareness of radon, provide measurements and advice on how to tackle radon in homes and workplaces, and undertake the research and development that support our services. Our public-facing website *************** is centred on the radon potential map of the UK, which was created from a combination of radon measurement data from almost 600,000 homes and local geology. The Radon Group is part of the Radiation, Chemicals, Climate and Environmental (RCCE) Hazards Directorate.
The Radon Programmes Team focuses on the analysis of large databases of radon measurements, assessing and advising on the effectiveness of radon reduction techniques, interactions with regulators, answering the more complex technical queries from householders and employers, and leading on new programmes such as measurement surveys.
This position is not a home-working position. The post-holder is expected to work 60% of their time in the office (Chilton) and, if desired, 40% from home.
This role will provide an interesting and supported introduction to project management in the Radon Group. The post holder will be responsible for a diverse range of activities to support the delivery of the team's objectives (usually within larger programmes), will help to support the smooth running of the project by assisting the operation of project management processes, and the co-ordination of business management actions and activities on behalf of the project team. The post holder will be expected to support the project manager with activities such as communication across the business, maintenance of central project records and production of regular management reports.

JOB SUMMARY: As an R&D Technician specializing in wood cabinetry and some metal products, you will play a pivotal role in the development, refinement and testing of our products. You will collaborate closely with our design, engineering, and production teams to bring concepts to life and ensure that they meet our stringent quality standards.
Essential Duties and responsibilities:
R&D: Construct prototypes of wood or metal based on design specifications and conceptual drawings. Utilize woodworking tools and machinery in the R&D room to construct designs for Product Development and Engineering, bringing back suggestions and design changes that may be needed.
Material Selection: Work with our engineering and procurement team to source and evaluate materials for construction. Ensure that materials meet quality standards and are suitable for production use.
Testing and Evaluation: Conduct comprehensive testing and evaluation of products to identify potential design flaws, structural weaknesses, or manufacturing challenges. Provide feedback and recommendations for improvements.
Documentation: Maintain detailed documentation throughout the R&D process, including materials used, construction techniques, time and costs accumulated in the design, test results, and revisions. Create reports summarizing findings and proposed solutions.
Collaboration: Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Product Development, Design, Engineering, Production, and Quality Assurance, to ensure alignment throughout the R&D process. Participate in design reviews and brainstorming sessions to generate innovative ideas and solutions.
Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in wood cabinetry design and manufacturing. Identify opportunities for process improvement and cost optimization.
Have a strong connection with and help Production Support when prototyping/testing work is not needed in R&D.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in woodworking, carpentry, industrial design, or a related field preferred.
Proven experience as an R&D technician, carpenter, or woodworker, preferably in the cabinetry industry.
Proficiency in woodworking tools and machinery, including saws, routers, sanders, and drills.
Strong understanding of wood properties, joinery techniques, and finishing processes.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD models.

This position is responsible for a broad range of technical support for the wildlife management program under the guidance of a Wildlife Biologist or Wildlife Technician - Advanced. Work duties mainly include working on habitat management activities and the use and maintenance of DNR equipment.
50% Assist with implementation of priority habitat management activities.
