Job Title: Research Scientist Reporting: Director of Innovation Ascent Industries Co. is seeking a Research Scientist to join our Research and Development team. This role will serve as the technical focal point for new custom and contract manufacturing projects and drive successful execution from proof of concept through commercial-scale production. This role will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders in R&D, Sales, Marketing, Engineering, and Manufacturing to drive commercial success with a focus on speed to solution, commercial-scale viability, deep technical rigor, and a proactive safety mindset. Establish R&D lab capabilities for synthesis, process development, sample preparation, and testing by evaluating current capabilities and additional needs to support project pipeline. Design experiments based on sound scientific principles and statistical methods to validate technical packages for proof of concept, optimize processes, and develop technical package for manufacturing to support First Time in Spec production. Rapidly produce samples for customer evaluation based on a thorough understanding of plant equipment capabilities and technical requirements Demonstrate expertise in a broad array of analytical instruments and drive new method development to align internal test methods and capabilities with customer methods and protocols. Leverage external labs for specialized test capabilities. Collaborate with key stakeholders in Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, and Product stewardship to drive successful commercialization. Engage with customers to gather process details, develop experimental plans, communicate project progress, present key findings, results, and support successful qualifications. Create Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions for core lab activities. Assure safe lab operations and compliance with site regulations while ensuring zero recordables. Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Special Physical Requirements: Bachelor's degree (advanced degree preferred) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering Proven hands-on industrial scale-up and technical transfer experience (5+ years) in fine or specialty chemicals or materials industry with subject matter expertise in one or more product categories: Adhesives, Coatings, Surfactants, Dispersions, Specialty Additives, and Reactive Blends. September 202 5-2028 Salem College's Engaging Ethics program seeks five student researchers to assist with research projects during the Spring 2026 semester to support work for the Touchstones for Character: Gender, Care, and Justice grant-funded project. Particular topics and projects include: Research on approaches to dialogue across difference currently being used at other colleges and universities; Research on approaches to honor codes and communities of honor at other colleges and universities along with the history of honor traditions at Salem College; Research on assessment tools such as the VIA Character Strengths assessment; Research on intersections between feminist care ethics and character education and how both are being cultivated within Salem's Engaging Ethics program, particularly in relation to Salem's touchstones of Courage, Integrity, Justice, Care, and Respect. The Research Associate will conduct research in their area expertise, publish journal papers, give research presentations and assist in the overseeing and management of all research and lab activities in the IMPACT Lab within the JSNN Intelligent Materials Innovation Laboratory (IMIL) under the supervision of lab PI, Dr. Michael Curry. In addition, the Research Associate will assist the IMPACT Lab PI Dr. Michael L. Minimum Requirements Minimum Requirements: * PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline) completed by the start date. * Experience with the application of Algorithms, Artificial intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) methods to accelerate material discovery and design, optimizing manufacturing processes in nanoscience or nanoengineering * Experience in mentoring and training users in classroom and laboratory environments * Excellent communication skills Strong interpersonal skills Experience working in a science research facility with knowledge of equipment usage * Develop and evaluate AI/ML methods applied to specific problems * Integrate and analyze complex datasets * Publish and disseminate research findings * Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education: * 2 or more years of experience working within a team driven environment * Demonstrated experience in excellent customer service * At least three years of training experience in the safe execution of research projects in a laboratory environment * Experience in writing standard operating procedures * Ability to work with researchers from broad backgrounds * Ability to perform research on AI/ML methods Required License or Certification N/A Is this position eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies.
