Develop and implement microbiology initiatives and programs

Supports FSMA initiatives and regulatory activities ensuring manufacturing sites are operating in compliance with all applicable microbial, food safety, quality and regulatory requirements

Lead improvement process for capturing learning from failures and sharing knowledge with all relevant stakeholders
Assist in developing and revising Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Ensure microbiology and food safety records are appropriately documented. Ensure the interpretation of the data is correct and the results are effectively communicated to appropriate individuals
Promote and organize training sessions to relevant stakeholders to build microbiology and food safety knowledge within facilities
Provides and shares insight into managing microbiological hazards in post-extrusion added ingredients
Consults with the contract manufacturing team to ensure compliance with Hill's internal standards and regulatory requirements.
Maintain a high degree of technical competence by reading scientific journals, attending professional workshops, and being aware of food industry issues and trends

The Biology Stockroom Assistant provides support and preparation for lab classes and research conducted within the biology department.
Essential Functions:
Assists the Biology Department Lab Supervisor in the preparation of materials for lab classes and biology research.
Prepare solutions for laboratory courses including sterilized media for microbiology under supervision of Laboratory Supervisor
Pipetting
Cleans and organizes equipment and supplies including glassware
Operates autoclave following safety procedures
Adherence to strict safety protocols including university and environmental waste management protocols
Assists with maintaining stockroom inventory
Performs set-up and take-down for lab sections.
Assists with keeping stockroom and lab rooms clean and organized.
Provides support for biology department faculty and staff with projects and tasks as needed. Performs additional job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Must be currently enrolled at Washburn University, a declared biology or chemistry major in good academic standing, and successfully completed one biology course with laboratory component OR have recommendation of NSD faculty member.
