The Quantum AI for Bio (QAI4Bio) Lab led by Dr. Christoph Gorgulla in the Center of Excellence for Data-Driven Discovery in the Structural Biology Department, seeks a skilled and highly motivated student intern in quantum computing/quantum machine learning for problems in the life sciences (chemistry, biology, drug discovery). Our research group is focused on developing state-of-the-art computational methods for ligand/drug discovery, using machine learning, high-performance/cloud computing, and quantum chemistry and quantum computing. Our group also includes a wet lab dedicated to experimentally verifying the computationally predicted results in real-world drug discovery projects. We are seeking a highly motivated student intern with deep expertise in machine learning and deep learning. You will join an interdisciplinary team to push the boundaries of what's possible at the intersection of artificial intelligence and molecular modeling. More information about our lab can be found here: ****************************************************** Key learning objectives: Design, implement, and optimize quantum computing/quantum machine learning methods for applications in drug discovery, biology, or quantum chemistry. Integrate and deploy models into our computational discovery pipelines. Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of computational chemists, structural biologists, and experimental scientists. Contribute to high-impact scientific publications and present research findings. Study levels this internship would complement: Actively enrolled as a student in a BS, MS, or PhD program at an accredited university. Proven hands-on experience in quantum computing through projects, research, or previous internships. Proficiency in at least one quantum computing software framework, such as Qiskit Excellent programming skills in Python. A degree (BS, MS, or PhD) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related discipline. Optional: Familiarity with molecular modeling software (e.g., RDKit, OpenBabel) and/or structural biology concepts is desirable, but not required. Specifically, the Memphis Zoo is seeking a candidate with experience in amphibian ecology, field biology, and conservation. Purpose: The purpose of this Research Technician is to assist in Memphis Zoo's efforts towards amphibian conservation. Working with the Amphibian Conservation Postdoc, the Research Technician will largely focus on the dusky gopher frog recovery program, which is one of Memphis Zoo's top-tier wildlife conservation priorities, with opportunities to be involved in a wide range of research projects in the Amphibian Lab. We seek candidates who are passionate about amphibian conservation and eager to apply their skills to contribute to both in situ and ex situ conservation and research (See Memphis Zoo website and list of of recent publications). Essential Dates: This appointment is for one year, with a possibility for extension based on future funding support. Completed applications are due October 15, 2025. Anticipated start date for position is January 5, 2026. Essential Job Functions: Assist with planning and execution of conservation and research projects, specifically working with the dusky gopher frogs (Lithobates sevosus), which is a flagship conservation species at the Memphis Zoo. Assist with in situ conservation and research efforts, including but not limited to logistical planning, field surveys around Memphis and in southern Mississippi (aquatic and terrestrial surveys, multi-day trips), data curation and processing, etc. Participant in short (2-4 days) monthly trips to the field site and occasional longer trips (~3-4 weeks) during the spring/summer months, depending on data collection and experimental design. Assist with ex situ conservation and research efforts, including but not limited to behavior and morphological assessments, running laboratory assays, captive-breeding, in vitro fertilization, etc. Work with collaborators at local universities. Responsibilities Roles and Responsibilities The University of Tennessee Health Science Center Memphis (UTHSC) faculty will work in collaboration with the UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORII), ORNL researchers and the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK) investigators to address the molecular mechanisms of cancer immunity affected by targeted alpha-radiation therapy of solid tumors. The new hire research faculty will collaborate on DART research projects, proposal preparation, submission, and student mentoring at the graduate level. This non-tenure position is a five-year contract with full salary support for the first year, followed by a gradual decrease in salary coverage such that the successful applicant will receive 50% salary support in year 5 and is expected to receive extramural funding by year 3 or earlier. The applicant will be expected to recruit graduate students by year 3. Potential of carryover for year 4 of the initial funding is possible. Continuation of the position will depend on the success of the hire and the team in attracting multi-year funding that will carry the possibility of conversion into a tenure-track position. A competitive startup package including support for PhD students and budget for equipment will be offered. We are especially interested in highly motivated candidates whose research interests align with radiation therapy (e.g., radiation biology, tumor immunology, cancer biology, theranostics research). The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent, academic laboratory-based research program that complements DART goals and integrate its research with ORNL and UTK researchers. Four anchor investigators of the project will provide mentoring and necessary infrastructure to the hire. The selected candidate will: Develop and lead research studies to understand the impact of radiation on antitumor immunity. Studies of the radiation-affected changes in the immunology of the tumor microenvironment are of great interest. Examine and optimize the efficacy of novel alpha-particle isotopes coupled via a chelator complex to a targeting antibody affect the exhaustion of immune cell responses againt tumor cells in the tumor microenvironment. Develop a strong collaboration with the members of this CRI and investigators at the UTHSC Center for Cancer Research, cancer researchers at UTK Cancer Institute and ORNL. Develop applications for extramural funding. Present findings to peer groups at conferences and to audiences of the CRI and UT-ORII meetings. Advise and supervise graduate students. Qualifications Research Faculty Position in CSLC Resistance to Radiation Therapy The successful applicant will have previous research experience with a documented list of peer-reviewed publications. Previous experience with writing funding proposals and success attracting research funding is a plus but not a requirement. The collaborative project will include ~ 20 investigators of DART developing novel alpha-emitting radionuclides that are targeted to tumor cells, CSLC in particular. The team of collaborators will include other professionals at UTK departments, and ORNL Divisions.
