The Ross Laboratory at Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 2 to perform more complex functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct a portion of the research project(s). The Ross Laboratory is led by Jason Ross, MD, PhD, and is situated within the Stanford University School of Medicine's Department of Radiation Oncology. The laboratory studies normal and malignant stem cells in the context of aging and cancer.
As an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Stanford Cancer Institute is a dynamic and stimulating place to work as it maintains the highest level of scientific rigor, institutional support and coordination for the complete range of cancer-related research, including basic, translational, clinical and population-based science.
Duties include:
Independently conduct a portion of the research project(s). Make recommendations on experimental design and/or research direction to principal investigator.
Independently conduct complex (lab and/or field) experiments to gather data for a portion of a major research project.
Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines exist, and make modifications to existing procedures and protocols.
Develop new research protocols where appropriate protocols are not described in the literature or where modification or adaptation of standard procedures and protocols is required.
Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; apply to ongoing research and development of new protocols.
Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section, and to publication of findings. Present ongoing work to colleagues and/or academic conferences.
Oversee supply and equipment budget under supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and direction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as a technical resource for other research staff.
Oversee the daily activities of the laboratory including lab maintenance; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. May assist with purchasing laboratory equipment.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Background in stem cell biology, cancer biology, and/or immunology.
Expertise with molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, qPCR, CRISPR/Cas9, and/or cloning.

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and two years of relevant work experience; or Master's degree in a related scientific field.

Operating and supporting dynamometer testing in-house developed dynamometer control software. This includes configuring channel setups and writing automated test scripts.
Monitor test runs, record performance data, and identify anomalies or equipment issues.
Troubleshooting of testing systems and customer product issues.
Collaborating with teams to create concepts and deliverables used to efficiently complete customer test requests and internal projects.
Test Cell Operators will not be responsible for any opinions or interpretations of customer test data.

What you'll do
Automated Synthesis Execution: Set up and run organic synthesis reactions using robotic liquid-handling systems (e.g., Opentrons OT-2), including sensitive reactions under inert conditions (glovebox, Schlenk lines) and photochemical reactions.
Robotic Work-Up Automation: Implement automated protocols for quenching, extraction, filtration, and evaporation (e.g., plate-based evaporators).
Stock Solution Preparation: Accurately weigh, dissolve, standardize, label, and organize reagent stock solutions and plates for robotic workflows.
Reagent Receipt & Qualification: Receive incoming chemical reagents and lab consumables, perform quality inspections, document batch information, and maintain inventory accuracy.
General Lab Maintenance: Manage shipping and receiving, maintain laboratory glassware and equipment, and perform routine upkeep to ensure seamless lab operations.
Data Management: Accurately document reaction parameters, analytical data (LC-MS, GC-MS), and reagent metadata in electronic lab notebooks, ensuring data integrity for AI/ML model development.
Instrument Maintenance: Regularly calibrate and maintain laboratory robotics, analytical instruments, and related equipment; troubleshoot technical issues as needed.
Protocol & Software Development: Assist in writing and refining Python or Bash scripts for automating laboratory workflows, data parsing, plate mapping, and instrument control.
Safety Compliance: Ensure adherence to chemical safety protocols, maintain accurate chemical inventories, and follow laboratory SOPs.
Minimum qualifications
B.S. or M.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
1+ year experience in an organic chemistry laboratory (industry or academia).
Familiarity with liquid-handling robots or analytical instrumentation.
Basic scripting proficiency (Python, Bash) or demonstrated ability to quickly acquire these skills.
Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
Nice-to-have
Experience in high-throughput experimentation or automated reaction work-ups.
Knowledge of inert-atmosphere handling techniques (glovebox, Schlenk).
Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or similar data-management software.
Hands-on experience with spectroscopy and chromatography techniques.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Carefully execute detailed standard operating procedures in a high throughput laboratory including sequence library preparation and DNA quality analysis.
• Implement quality management procedures, LIMS tracking, data entry, protocol/process deviation documentation.
• Carry out DNA molecular methods including DNA isolation, PCR, qPCR , dd PCR and NGS.
