We are looking for a Senior AI Algorithm Scientist with a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and AI/ML to design and define new mathematical models from scratch. This role is central to our AI innovation efforts and focuses on creating theoretically grounded and practically effective algorithms, which will then be passed to ML Engineers for training and deployment.
Unlike typical ML engineering or data science roles, this position is research-heavy and modeling-centric. You will act as the architect of novel algorithms that deeply reflect the business context and data behavior.

Your Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct statistical and economic analyses of current macroeconomic, microeconomic, financial, and regional data, and provides support for the economists in their academic research and policy work.
Support the economists in their basic and applied research by following instructions to perform tasks including collecting data, conducting moderately complex statistical analysis, writing code for model estimation, and organizing the presentation of results.
Prepare a variety of charts, tables, and descriptive text for department management or other staff economists to use in their briefings of the President and the Board of Directors.
Collaborate with economists at all stages of the research process - from literature reviews and data analyses to regressions and presentations of results [on some occasions, efforts will be substantial enough to lead to jointly authored articles with economists]

Position Summary

EPIC is contributing innovative solutions to the Global Energy Challenge: how can we ensure that people around the world, today and in the future, have access to the reliable, affordable energy needed for human development without putting our health, environment and climate at risk? Previous results from EPIC projects have been influential with policymakers worldwide and featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and other leading publications. Typical research projects involve the analysis of environmental and energy data from the United States, India, China, and other countries, utilizing experimental, quasi-experimental, and modeling methods.
Successful candidates will report to Michael Greenstone, Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, founding director of the University's Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth and the director of the interdisciplinary Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in public policy, social sciences, nonprofit management, social sector consulting, research methods, or a related field
3+ years of relevant experience in project management, research administration, or analytics support, preferably in consulting, client-serving business, philanthropy, nonprofits, or public administration
Excellent research skills and a well-developed ability to find, review, synthesize, evaluate, and translate qualitative research findings into relevant insights
Ability to outline and manage research and writing projects and collaborate with staff at all levels in cross-functional teams
Self-starter, detail-oriented with strong organizational skills who can manage multiple tasks, work independently and with a team to adapt and respond quickly to opportunities

The position is hybrid and based in Chicago, Illinois.
Annual salary for this role will start at $89,500. We offer a generous total compensation package that emphasizes both base salary and a comprehensive benefits package to support your life, health, and well-being.
