What We Need: We are seeking a detail-oriented individual to fill the role of Greenhouse Research Technician at our Research facility in Kent, OH. This position will conduct research, innovation and development of new grower-focused products. Day-to-day activities of this position include planning experiments and trials, collecting data, writing reports, and greenhouse maintenance and sanitation. Additional duties include procuring plant material, lab and greenhouse consumables. Although most product development is carried out in the greenhouse, this position does involve some laboratory and post-harvest work. This individual, by nature, must be innovative, have a strong work ethic, and be a team player. Areas of focus for the Greenhouse Research Technician role will include (but not be limited to): Conducts and assists with research experiments in the greenhouse for propagation, container production of bedding plants, or hydroponic production (deep-water culture and nutrient film technique) of bedding plants or leafy greens. Manages greenhouse environmental controls. Will contribute ideas, experiments and findings to research peers on a weekly basis. Plans and runs greenhouse trials by setting up, trial maintenance and data collection, followed by data entry and analysis. Presents findings and data to research team. Maintain trials, including irrigation, scouting for pests, and application of plant growth regulators and/or insecticides as needed for healthy crop production. Pour-through methods to measure pH and EC of pot leachate. Document trials with photos at the beginning and end, including photos of individual plant treatments. Transfer photos to computer and annotate/label crop photos. Reads and reviews research literature to generate innovative ideas for new product development. Identifies production or post-harvest related problems within industry, reviews literature to learn possible solutions and uses the information to improve or develop product solutions. Aseptic culturing techniques (including media). Maintain greenhouse and lab areas in a clean and organized manner. Maintain inventory and requisition supplies and chemicals. Who We Are Looking For: An individual with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in horticulture, environmental sciences, biology or botany is preferred. An individual who has a minimum of 1 to 2 years greenhouse floriculture or CEA experience is preferred. An individual with knowledge of greenhouse operations and management is preferred. An individual who has experience using Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and SAS statistics is beneficial. An individual who is able to to learn new techniques and carry out experiments with minimal supervision. An individual who has an existing pesticide applicator license is a plus. An individual who is able to effectively communicate and collaborate with other researchers. An individual who can lift products and materials up to 60 pounds. Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE Working under general supervision, plan and carry out research project in accordance with general plans. The Clinical Lab Assistant (RA2) will support laboratory/research activities for the National Prion Surveillance Lab dedicated to diagnostic and research work on prion diseases. The Clinical Lab Assistant (RA2) will receive, process and accession clinical/research samples, assist with laboratory inventory management, assist with biobank specimen retrieval, and perform specimen testing, as indicated by competency assessment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Under general supervision Plan and carry out project in accordance with general plans. Prepare and process histology slides for autopsy surveillance brain and clinical brain biopsy specimens by performing staining, both manually and automated [immunohistochemical, H&E and other specialized staining]. Oversee inventory, maintain stock and solutions, monitor instrument performance, and maintain cleanliness and order of the lab. May assist in developing improved techniques, projection methods or procedures and histology lab procedures and policies as part of process improvements and updated procedures as required by regulatory standards. Perform quality control (QC) on finished slide preparations and maintain required quality control documentation for samples and instrument operations. Maintain and troubleshoot equipment operation failures. Assist in processing research requests from internal and external clients. Consult with NPDPSC management and directors of the division on projects as assigned. (45%) * Conduct a series of experiments to supply scientific information as part of a larger project. Accession samples accurately in a BSL2 lab, utilizing standard precautions. Handle specimens, including potentially prion infected samples, and evaluate them for testing viability in a timely manner based on the NPDPSC test directory. Collect and analyze data. Match received specimen paperwork with coordinating specimen label(s) for accuracy. Effectively utilize an LIS system for receiving clinical samples. Identify and report discrepancies immediately to the appropriate supervisor. Contact clients regarding specimen condition, missing information, or final reports. Handle specimen verification calls to the sender or referring physician to verify how the sample was treated and any other knowledge deemed necessary. (20%) * Digital pathology management: under general supervision, design and implement a working protocol for the digital scanner, including operational workflow, quality control, and file management. Develop maintenance procedures and draft training documentation. Establish a digital sharing and archival system to foster collaboration with external physicians and researchers. (20%) * Responsible for sharing surveillance data entry duties. Input information into LabMatrix database, including all correspondence, clinical assessments, and clinical/family history. Link relevant documents and perform secondary data review. (10%) * Assist in training new staff in the pre-analytical area, and the histology laboratory. QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree and 1 to 3 years of related experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 2 to 4 years of experience required.
