    Cancer remains the second leading cause of mortality in the United States, surpassed only by heart disease. Optimizing healthcare delivery for the detection and treatment of cancer is a top priority but it is often hindered by the complexities and shortcomings of the fragmented healthcare system. The Thompson Lab is devoted to studying patterns of healthcare delivery for cancer patients, especially around the time of diagnosis, and uncovering drivers of cancer care disparities across populations defined by race, ethnicity, income, and geography. This position will work to assist on a research project that is a collaboration between epidemiology and clinical informatics. Our research projects generally use sources of secondary real-world data (insurance claims, EHRs, cancer registries, death certificates) to answer complex questions. We are currently seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to our dynamic research team. Specifically, this position will have 100% effort dedicated to the Cancer Identification and Precision Oncology Center ( CIPOC ). The overall scope of the University of North Carolina ( UNC )-based CIPOC is to bring together structured and unstructured electronic health record ( EHR )-derived data, insurance claims, and geographic data to rapidly identify cases and improve care quality and equity via access to cutting edge clinical advances for cancer. As a CIPOC team member, the incumbent will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of investigators and research staff from Cancer Epidemiology, NC TraCS Institute, and Renaissance Computing Institute. Research tasks include literature searches, data collection and management, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, presentation of data, and manuscript and grant review and preparation. Position Summary Full-time post-doctoral position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. We are looking for candidates interested in developing expertise in tobacco control policy research and systems science. The position is part of the UNC NIH/FDA-funded Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science (TCORS). The broad theme of the UNC TCORS is building the science for effective FDA public health decision-making about tobacco products. The specific project the postdoc will work on uses microsimulation modeling to estimate the public health impact of a ban on flavored cigars in different plausible post-ban scenarios in the US population. A key goal of this project is to understand how contextual factors, such as retailer compliance or policy enforcement, may impact ban effectiveness. This mixed-methods project includes use of nationally representative surveys, literature reviews, causal loop diagramming, an expert elicitation process, and simulation modeling. The postdoc will take part in study design, implementation, data analysis, and interpretation and publication of study findings. The postdoc will also develop their own research questions regarding tobacco regulatory science and will receive multidisciplinary training and mentorship from senior researchers with expertise in tobacco control and systems science. Prior experience with decision science, tobacco control or simulation modeling is preferred, but not required. Along with other tobacco control trainees at UNC, postdocs will be able to participate in career development webinars. In addition, travel funds will be available to present research. Additional InformationStooping/Bending Forward bending at the waist is necessary at the pizza assembly station. Toe room is present, but workers are unable to flex their knees while standing at this station. Duration of this position is approximately 30 - 45 seconds at one time, repeated continuously during the day. Forward bending is also present at the front counter and when stocking ingredients. Crouching/Squatting Performed occasionally to stock shelves and to clean low areas. Reaching Reaching is performed continuously; up, down and forward. Workers reach above 72" occasionally to turn on/off oven controls, change prices on sign, and lift and lower objects to and from shelves. Workers reaching down to perform such tasks as scooping cornmeal from a plastic barrel, or washing dishes. Frequently activities require use of one or both hands. Shaping pizza dough requires frequent and forceful use of forearms and wrists. NC A&T is classified as "R2-High Research Activity" by the Carnegie Foundation and is poised to achieve "R1-Very High Research Activity" Status. The Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) is an academic collaboration between NC A&T and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). JSNN is a $56.3 million, 105,000 square foot state-of-the-art science and engineering education and research facility. JSNN builds on the strengths of the two universities to offer innovative and cross-disciplinary M.S. and Ph.D. graduate programs in the emerging areas of nanoscience and nanoengineering. JSNN partnered with Georgia Tech and was awarded a National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI) grant titled "Southeastern Nanotechnology Infrastructure Corridor (SENIC) by the National Science Foundation. JSNN and SENIC have provided great opportunities to conduct competitive nanoengineering research at NC A&T. The Department of Nanoengineering is dedicated to educating the next generation of leaders in nanotechnology, advancing the understanding of nanoscale phenomena and applications, and serving society through education, outreach, and development of cutting-edge technologies. Minimum Requirements (1) Ph.D. in Nanoscience/Nanoengineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline from an accredited institution. (2) Solid background in nanomaterials and abundant experience in nanoparticle synthesis. (3) Self-motivated and independent researcher. (4) Good communication skills. (5) Publication record. (6) Experience in mentoring students. Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education (1) Previous experience in nanoparticle synthesis such as metal nanoparticles, co-shell nanoparticles, ceramic nanoparticles, and hybrid nanoparticles, as well as nanoparticle characterization and application. (2) Proficiency in analytical tools like SEM, TEM, DSC, and other nanomaterial characterization techniques. (3) Excellent critical thinking, writing, communication, teamwork, and organization/management skills.
