Responsibilities: * Design innovative materials and develop in-depth knowledge of organic electronic material properties, synthesis and display applications. * Perform design, synthesis, purification, analysis and characterization of small to medium scale organic and/or organometallic compounds. * Coordinate with OLED chemistry coworkers to identify and solve synthetic challenges. * Implement state-of-the-art synthetic methods to access novel organic and/or organometallic compounds. * Collaboration with chemists and engineers to improve materials and devices. * Stay up to date with scientific literature. * Be able to write and interpret technical information and effectively communicate with peers within the team and across the organization. * Accurately record experimental work within the electronic notebook(s). * Maintain a clean and safe laboratory work area and follow all relevant safety policies. * Be responsible lab citizen. Required Qualifications & Essential Skills: * PhD in Chemistry. * In depth understanding and proven experience with the synthesis and characterization of organic and/or organometallic compounds. * Demonstrated experience multi-step organic synthesis and/or organic synthesis methodology is preferred. * Demonstrated understanding of organic and organometallic reaction mechanisms. * Knowledge of modern analytical techniques (HPLC, GC, MS, NMR, UV) and instrumentation (automated purification systems) for the isolation and identification of organic compounds. * Experienced in basic computer software and internet applications including: MS Office Suit, ChemDraw, e-notebook and LIMS. * Strong organizational skills, keen attention to detail, and ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines. * Ability to work independently and proactively with minimal direction. * Ability to perform and succeed in a multi-disciplinary team environment. * Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with peers and management. * Ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems in an efficient, proactive manner. * Demonstrated track record of accuracy and thoroughness. A UNCW postdoctoral scholar in the College of Science and Engineering is a 12-month full-time temporary non-faculty position. The primary responsibility of the Postdoctoral scholar will be performing synthetic, organic chemistry research on the NIH-funded project 1R15GM155801-01 in the Morgan laboratory. Research duties will include experimental design and completion, manuscript preparation, graduate and undergraduate student mentoring, and assistance with daily laboratory management. The opportunity to serve as instructor of record for a lecture course is optional. UNCW postdoctoral scholars gain important training and research experience through their relationship with the university in ways that support and fulfill the research, scholarship, and teaching missions of the institution. Upon initial appointment, postdoctoral scholars may provide oversight of research projects and personnel, project management, assistance in development and writing of proposals and manuscripts, data acquisition, higher-level interpretation of computational results and comprehensive data analysis. These activities may be carried out in both field and laboratory settings.
